Don't know if this has been done before but wanted to see some discussion here.
You can ONLY pick one book. What is your favorite book ever and why? Books that you would recommend over any other and ones you couldn't put down.

Mine is easily Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. It's a masterpiece and has the historical, vengeance traits that I love in stories.
What say you?

Tough one - I like a handful of series, but for a single - stand alone novel (assuming we're mainly on the fiction deal here), the candidates would be:

The Great Gatsby

Catch-22

Red Storm Rising

(Obviously, for very different reasons.)

Tough to answer, but if you're limiting it to a single book I'd have to say Lord of the Rings.

All my other favorites are series.

Wow! I have a small handful of favorites. But I can't break the tie - it's between A CHRISTMAS CAROL and DRACULA.

The Killer Angels by Jeff Shaara. I have a history degree and my focus was in U.S. civil war history, so this makes sense.

That's tough. Recently I read Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy by Eric Metaxas. Was blown away...definitely my favorite book I've read recently.

Watership Down-Richard Adams

It was my first multi-read novel. I've read it at least 10 times.

This thread has brought up some old favorites. Watership Down would be on my list. I read it in middle school because it was on a list of stuff to borrow w/ Tolkien so cool teacher back then. I remember being sucked in and then******SPOILER ALERT*****holy crap i'm reading about a bunch of rabbits. Still great.

also The Hobbit, Ask The Dust, Confederacy Of Dunces, For Whom The Bell Tolls, The Spy Who Came In From The Cold, The Getaway, Breakfast Of Champions, Catcher In The Rye, Lord Of The Flies, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Salems Lot.
