I’m currently reading it. The movie is better than the book, which is rare.

One of the few instances where the film is significantly better than the book.

It’s good, just not best in class like the film is. It also fleshes out some of the characters more so than the movie, particularly Sonny and Johnny Fontaine

Godfather is one of those instances where the movie became its own successful thing, spawned by a book but ending up significantly different in many ways. Jurassic Park and The Hunt for Red October were the same way.

You say “Books”, are you talking about The Godfather and The Last Don?
Godfather book was good, not great. The Last Don was a later in life money grab. Embarrassingly bad book.

The book goes off on the weird tangent about *SPOILER ALERT*the lady w/ the giant vagina. The movie is better.

Thats because Mario, against his wishes, because he was broke added smut in order to sell the books.

Puzo also wrote The Sicilian which was terrible.

I enjoyed the book more than the movie because it more in depth on the characters than the movie.

For those that liked the movie and The Offer try "Leave the gun; Grab the Cannoli" and "The Kid Stays in the Picture" both are great books.

The Godfather book is exponentially better the second time you read it and know which sections you can just skip.

Unless detailed accounts of vaginal reconstruction is your thing.

I read The Godfather in HS and the movie is much better. By books do you mean the Mark Winegardner books? If so I read those 3 or 4 years ago. They are authorized by the Puzo estate, it attempts to fill in gaps and flesh out some things from the movies. They aren't terrible but I'm not sure I would ever read them again.

How else would Mario give accurate details of just how much meat Sonny was packing?
