Had surgery (nothing life threatening) yesterday and would like to read some longer works while I'm recovering and have the time. Open to any and all genres. TIA

Non fantasy (long list), The Count of Monte Cristo is a good epic. Pretty enjoyable all the way through and not a lot of lag like most 1000+ pagers.
If you happened to watch the series Shogun on FX, the book would be up your alley.
I would vote against Les Misérables. That was a snooze fest and one of the few books I've ever given up on.

The GOT books
The Stand
Once an Eagle
Count of Monte Cristo
World Without End
Gone with the Wind
Not necessarily in that order.

As mentioned in the thread already:
The game of thrones books
The Stand
Shogun
World without end (you'd want to read Pillars of Earth first, which is 800ish pages).
If you are a fantasy fan the Stormlight Archives by Brandon Sanderson or Scott Erikson's Malazan books are all around 1000 page books in those series. Though Malazan is very much a love it our you hate series for most.
If you like Shogun, Taipan and Noble House by the same author are great too.

Read it in 4th grade because it was 125 accelerated reader points, but my God it was boring. Will not reread

Lonesome Dove is probably first place for me. I read the book before watching the series, might not be as good if you've watched the series already.
Did the fountainhead and atlas shrugged. I liked them, but they did get sloggy at times. Lonesome dove was fun the whole way.

I almost picked up war and peace a couple weeks ago but pussed out. Is it worth it for anybody that’s read it?

Several of James Michner's novels come to mind. My favorites in order:
1. Chesapeake
2. Alaska
3. The Source
Also, Neal Stephenson's Cryptomicon is really good.

I'm glad I read it but I wouldn't put it in many Top 5 lists.

One of my all-time favorites. Another good one is Mortal Friends by James Carroll

I'm not sure it is a 1000+, but is definitely in the hefty book category is Clancy's Red Storm Rising.
It gets lost in the noise of all the Jack Ryan books, but it is its own thing, entirely and discreetly. It is one of the finest mass market fiction books of all time.
I think I started reading it on a Friday and finished by Sunday evening in undergrad.
