re: Stormlight Archives - Spoilers and Discussion thread (and other Cosmere spoilers)

It's not a trilogy like others have said. It's supposed to be a 10 book saga split in two 5-book series. He's writing number 5 now, so hopefully it's out by the end of the year.

Shallan is why I can’t finish the book 4. Her multiple personalities are all bad
Wasn’t my favorite thing but I could deal with her. Wasn’t as annoying as the multiple personality Susanna in Dark Tower.

I read the first two based on this thread. It was fine but not exactly my favorite fantasy books. I don't really find myself caring enough to want to start the third. To each their own I guess.

I'm on the second one, and this is sort of my take. I actually am enjoying the second book more than the first, though. I guess the people who love Way of Kings really enjoy the Kaladan exile/redemption plotline and how he crafts the bridge men into something special, but it just didn't do it for me. I probably shouldn't have gone into it with the expectation of it being the best fantasy book ever, though. That can set the bar unreasonably high.

I don't know what to say to yall, honestly.
The first two books are nearly perfect fantasy books.

Damn! I picked The Kingkiller Chronicles over The Way of the Kings. I’m definitely going to change direction now.

Question for you guys on this topic…
I’ve read the first two Stormlight Archive books before knowing about any of the other books. Should I continue to the next or jump to mistborn now and come back?
I ask because it seems like Mistborn continues to be the recommendation to read first.

If you want to engage in the larger universe Sanderson is creating then you should read some other books before getting into the third storm light book IMO

It depends if you want the maximum possible Cosmere easter eggs/connections. My answer to that would be a resounding yes.
Here's what I'd recommend. Stop Stormlight for now and read Mistborn era 1, Warbreaker and Elantris in any order you want. Then you'd probably want to read a couple of the short stories like Edgedancer and The Eleventh Metal.
Then you can go back to Stormlight 3. Also, I recommend holding off on Mistborn Secret History till after Stormlight 4 then you can read Mistborn Era 2.

You could read Mistborn era two up to book 3. Do not read lost metal until you’re caught up to stormlight 4.

Thanks! - Starting Mistborn 1 now.

I’m about 2/3 through Words of Radiance, it’s fantastic so far.
However, Shallan is an unbelievably stupid vapid bitch and I hate her. The book suffers every page she’s written on and I hope she dies horribly at some point. But I’m sure she won’t.
Now I’m off to finish this and Oathbringer. I’ll be back after for spoilers and discussion.

A lot of people hate Shallan. I do not although there are times when I really, really struggle with her.
In fact, you will start to struggle with all of the characters for various reasons, intentionally. They all have...issues.

I hated Shallan at first but she eventually grew on me. Probably my least favorite still but I don’t hate her

In Book 3, I find Kaladin to be more annoying than Shallan, though Shallan is also annoying. Kaladin's dad is probably the worst/most annoying character in the whole damned thing, though.
Kaladin's emo moping gets real old, to me. I know that it's the story arc, and we will have a triumphant moment where he snaps out of it and finds glory... but the wallowing in the depression and self-doubt gets old.
Once again, though, I know SAnderson is doing it on purpose.. it's the tension/release that leads to catharsis... but still..

Kaladin has PTSD. I can forgive a little moping
His dad does annoy the absolute shite out of me though.

Way of Kings and Words of Radiance are two of my top books of all time. Wasn’t a huge fan of oathbringer and DNF’d RoW about 200 pages in. About to give it another shot just because I’ve invested so much time into it and I’ve taken about a year or two away from the series
Posted on 3/10/23 at 10:15 am to Clyde
The first couple of hundred pages of RoW are my least favorite in the entire series. Just a total chore.
But it does pick up and end pretty well.

Read Name of the Wind, then forget about the Rothfuss forever and praise Sanderson for the literary god he is

I really liked The Wise Man’s Fear outside of one side adventure plot. But yea Rothfuss, the fat man, and Locke Lamora books I’ve accepted will not be complete. Give Erikson a spin if you like the prose and are cool with much darker fantasy.
