Should I read the “Dune” series?

Recently for Christmas I got the first 3 books of the Dune series. Dune, Dune Messiah, and Children of Dune. I’m about to start reading Dune, am I in for a treat? Is it worth the read? Should I read the first 3 books? Should I then read 4-6 or stop after 3? Appreciate anybody’s insight on this.

I’ve got a few others before I pick up book 2.
If you saw the movie, you ended up missing about half the story up to where the movie ends. There’s a lot more with the baron and I think it’s well worth reading.
I had a lot going on when I finished the book but I don’t remember feeling like “I’ve gotta find out what happens right now” at the end of the first book. I really did enjoy the book and characters a lot and definitely think you’ll like it.
The other thing I kept in my mind is how old the book is. You definitely see the influence it has had over time.

Honestly, some people don't like the second one as much, because some of the heroes from the first book end up fighting each other in the second.
But I think that everyone who reads the third book enjoys it.
I really liked the fourth book as well -- never started 5 or 6.

The first Dune book is one of the best sci-fi books of all time. The next two are decent.
I'm not huge fan of the 4th, but many people love it. It's a very slow paced, philosophical book. The 5th and 6th books are great though.

I love Dune and it's a must read. The first half can be a bit tiresome though and is a nice book to put you to sleep
Sci-Fi and Fantasy are my favorite genres and I read quite a bit of it. I couldn't get through the 2nd book. Gave up pretty early on.

The original is one of the best (and my favorite) sci-if books ever. I wasn’t nearly as enthralled with the second, but enough to keep going. The third is much better IMO so I’m planning to at least get through the Frank Hebert books this year.

Dune is my favorite book series.
Yes, you should read it. Just understand that this isn't a space adventure book; philosophy and politics are woven into the story. The books cover what it means to be human. What is the future of the human race? What happens when a charismatic leader takes over and god-like mythos is built around him? If the human race grows stagnant, how can they be shaken out of that stagnation?
A lot of the action takes place behind the scenes, and is often only mentioned in passing.

Yes. I wanted to read them before seeing the movie and now I’m obsessed. I’m on God Emperor right now but my favorite was Children of Dune.
SyFy channel did a miniseries of Dune Messiah and Children of Dune in the early 2000s and it features some really big Hollywood names. It was really well done

I'm on Heretics of Dune. Love the series so far. I'm also on The First Law Trilogy as well and go back and forth on my libby availability. First Law Trilogy has really surprised me. On book two.

I read Dune for the first time right before the movie came out this year, and loved. I got pretty bored after book 2 and moved on to other stuff. The original Dune was badass though, loved it.

Its right under LOTR for best fantasy series of all time for me. Just an incredible trilogy and there are solo stories books that go along with them that are great as well. Abercrombie is such a good writer.

The core books* by Frank are almost essential for any hardcore science fiction fan. However, it does go off the rails (IMHO) at some point and especially when Brian took over.
*Dune, Messiah, Children, GE, Heretics and Chapterhouse

There's a sequel trilogy as well: The Age of Madness. The final book of this trilogy came out last year. And there will definitely be more sequels - as the book ends, not so much on a cliffhanger, but has an "oh frick" moment that will lead into the next series of books.
But, read the solo books before getting into the sequel trilogy.

I hear this a lot, and I honestly believe that if Frank had been able to finish the series it would have all tied together and wouldn't seem so off the rails at the end.

frick Brian and his McDune books. How he finished the original series was a travesty. I've always questioned his father's "notes" that were miraculously found in a safety deposit box decades later, and that these notes contained stories that completely undid everything that Frank was setting up to finish the series.

Yeah, the son has a clear misunderstanding of what the Butlerian Jihad was.

Read all three. Then, read the rest. I'm a big fan. I've actually read every follow up book by Anderson and Frank's son. If you enjoy the series, I recommend the House series and the following Machine crusade books. The rest aren't great but continues the story and fills in some gaps.

I’m hooked on this series, read dune, then started “house of atredies” , now on house harkoneen”.
It’s better than Star Wars in my opinion. And up there with red rising series. The prequels to dune are fricking awesome
