Doing my second re-read of Robin Hobb's The Realm of the Elderlings. On book 16.

That list is terrible, particularly the top 2. A Dance with Dragons isn't remotely close to one of the top 10 of the last 20 years. And Oathbringer is very good, but much like the rest of Stormlight it isn't remotely edited or tightly written enough to be the best fantasy book of the last 20 years. And saying the fifth book of Stormlight isn't as good as the first 3 is a massive understatement. I pulled myself through the 4th book and found it disappointing, but the 5th was straight up bad. It took me months to finish it, and I'm a guy that will blow through a 1000 page book in a few days.
But what was really criminal about the 5th book was the lack of any resolution for the majority of the main characters or the story, it was ridiculous for a 5 book series, much less one that's over 5000 pages. There is a really amazing 3000 page series in the Stormlight Archive somewhere, it's just too bad Sanderson had nobody to reign him in and it has 2000 pages of bloat. I don't think it's dumb for anyone to not want to continue after Way of Kings after the way the series finished.
I'll admit I'm not a Sanderson fanboy though, his magic systems are fantastic, but he's only recently become even decent at writing characters. Mistborn era 2 and Warbreaker are exceptions though, they are fantastic. The reckoners series had well written characters too.

Yeah, the last book made me have zero interest in the second five book series unless I hear good things about the entire thing after it's already done and finished.

About to finish book 2 of the Liveship Trilogy. Finally getting more into it. Crazy that the best/most interesting character this the horrible horrible Pirate Kennit lol.

Just finished the first book if this series on your recommendation. Good stuff so far. Definitely some flashes of the Black Company in there, mixed with a little bit of Malazan. In terms of tone it reminds me a good bit of Mark Lawrence's Prince of Thorns and Liars Key trilogies.

Finished it yesterday.
Not surprisingly, it was weird. For 175 pages it was surprisingly not weird at all, which was surprising. Then it got very weird
So much so that at the very end I need someone else to finish so I can ask what something meant. It was bloody too. Wasn't expecting that. As I said it felt like an adult jungle book early on so it's obviously animals and this isn't a spoiler but animals dying is a tough read. There was one chapter in particular that I had a hard time with.
Mount Char was like a 6/5 rating for me, dang near perfect. This was probably 4/5. Might have been higher if notfor some difficult parts to get through that made me not so fond for a certain character. Worth reading though, it's definitely different.

Nimblejack is quite a character.
The book can sometimes feel a bit disjointed, but the world and characters just get deeper and more well-rounded as the series progresses, imo.

Yeah, he was the character that gave me Prince of Thorns vibes. Reminded me a lot of a grown up version of the main character from that series. And the company itself had big time Black Company/Malazan army vibes.

Anybody read The Price of Fear? Thinking about this as a next read.
Was also thinking about starting Malazan. A bit of a commitment obviously but he seems to be the one that people compare the most to Abercrombie so I like that.

Malazan is one of my favorite completed fantasy series, but while it is similar to Abercrombie when it comes to the grittiness of the series, it is very high magic compared to Abercrombie.
It's very similar to the Black Company books by Cook as mentioned, which was Erikson's inspiration.

Took a detour and quickly read the latest Bobiverse book - The Infinite Extent.

Yea he’s doing a Mistborn movie with them first and his first draft is done. That should be next on the docket.

I was going to pick this up, but may wait to see how long it takes for the next book to come out. I don't want to like this book then get Scott Lynched.
