I've challenged myself to read denser, longer, more epic novels this year. After Dune and the Bros. Karamazov, next on my list was Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove.

I'm about 1/3 of the way through it, and man, I am enjoying it. Haven't seen the miniseries in so long that it's all brand new to me.

Who else has enjoyed this epic?

You should read the whole series in the order of the chronological story line which is not the order in which they were published.
Lonesome Dove is the best, but they are all definitely worth reading.

I would advise you to put Lonesome Dove aside for now and start with Dead Man’s Walk and Comanche Moon. Then read Lonesome Dove and finish with Streets of Laredo.

I've actually heard thats the wrong way to go.

Best way is to read Lonesome Dove as a standalone then read the others chronologically if you want. Reading them all chronologically with Lonesome Dove 3rd kinda waters down the greatness of it because the first 2 can be a slog.

Again this is just what i've heard from several people, i havent read any of them.

Well, Lonesome Dove was published years before the others and was certainly designed as a standalone, but I think the others are well worth reading. I don't consider them slogs and don't think they water down the greatness of Lonesome Dove. I think they prolong the enjoyment. Just my opinion.

The outright redneck worship of this in the area I live has soured me on any and everything Lonesome Dove.

Lonesome Dove first

Then Dead Man's Walk, Camanche Moon, and finish with Streets of Laredo.

Dead Man's Walk and Comanche Moon are definitely not a slog!!

Of course, I like anything by McMurtry. The Berrybender Narratives are great too.

I wouldn’t go that far but compared to the book, the miniseries is a grand disappointment.

That’s how good the book is.

I find myself highlighting random passages at a rate that I just don't do normally in fiction. I've even taken to reading aloud to the Missus at night as she falls asleep. It's a great ride.

We're still in Texas, but I've thoroughly enjoyed it.

The worst part is finishing it and realizing you will never read it the first time again.

I'm currently reading this, and I have about 200 pages left. I am enjoying it thoroughly.

Please explain the joke behind the Latin misquote: “Uva uvam vivendo varia fit.” in Lonesome Dove.

It was either showing Gus's imperfect understanding of Latin, which happens to him again later in the novel.

Or changing the Latin verb videndo (by seeing) to vivendo (by living), the author was saying that Gus and Call and the rest of the Hat Creek Company have been shaped by being in the presence of each other.

Finished the book last night.

Thoroughly enjoyed it.

It's the type of book I wish I would have read when I was younger.

Do not do this.
