Favorite children's books?
What are the must haves I should be reading to a new born and as they age and eventually read on their own? What are the "classics"?

The Giving Tree.

Although there is an argument that it is, in fact, NOT a children's book.

See if your zip code is eligible for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. They mail an age-appropriate book to the kid each month from birth to about age 5. It’s mostly in poorer areas, but not always.

re: Favorite children's books?
If it's for a newborn remember that if you let them have free access between now and about four there is a good chance they destroy the book. So if you get a nice hardback that you want them to keep put it up where they can't reach it when you aren't reading. I learned that one with many a ripped out and colored on page.

Goodnight Moon is a good book and everyone should have a copy of Mother Goose. Almost anything from Dr Seuss should be good.

Katie & The Big Snow/Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel/The Little House

all 3 of those are fantastic and my little one absolutely loved how much detail she goes into on each of those. those are a staple i've read to 4 kids now.

"Stand Back" Said the Elephant, "I'm Going to Sneeze"

The Hungry Caterpiller

A Light in the Attic is another collection of Shel Silverstein that's just as good as Where the Sidewalk Ends.

My son loved these 3. Still reads Llama Llama sometimes. At one point he memorized all of Goodnight Moon and would just recite it himself.
