I am about 75 pages to go, i had to put down because i needed a break from the martell story line. I got spoiled with the Jon story line.
If the books was only the wall and the north it would have been awesome.

I have another crackpot theory/speculation that I've been thinking about...so if the Northerners (including Wildlings) have warging tendencies, did the First Men mate with the Children of the Forest? Could explain why the crannogmen are short in stature, mysterious, etc.

Even when you finish, you might feel unsatisfied with nothing happening.
That's okay. Remember, Martin comes from screen writing.
DwD and AFfC were Act II of the series, and Act II isn't supposed to feel like Act I or Act III.
A lot of readers get frustrated with these two books, which are really one book, but they serve an important purpose.
BLAH talked about it some, which I think probably is discussed in this essay.

Interesting read. I'm not sure I'd seen a discussion before on the connection between Jon' stabbing and the Azhor Azai prophecy. Especially the bleeding star being Sir Patrek. I always thought that was just an inside joke between a Giant's fan (GRRM) and a Cowboy's fan (a friend of his apparently named Patrek).
