Longhorns Head Coach Tom Herman Called Texas The 'Mecca' Of College Football
© Bethany Hocker-USA TODAY Sports
While on ESPN’s Golic and Wingo talking about the upcoming football season this week, Texas Longhorns head coach Tom Herman called Texas the "Mecca" of college football. He refers to both his program and the state of Texas, but pretty sure that won't sit well SEC fans. Here's the full interview...

quote:

“I fell in love with big-time football as a graduate assistant here (at Texas) and I’m a Division III guy and had coached a year of Division III football, and all of a sudden I’m a graduate assistant at the Mecca of college football.”

...

“So, it certainly was appealing back then and we’re proud to be back 20 years later as the head coach,” Herman said on Golic and Wingo. “But I think the state of Texas does well when all of its in-state schools do well, but when you’re the university of whatever state it is you carry a responsibility to make your state proud.”

Why this is news is beyond me I’d be more surprised if he hadn’t said that by now.

Trash him all you want but I firmly believe Herman wins a Natty there at some point.

he's already had consecutive top 3 recruiting classes. If that continues, Texas could rise to the top.

they haven't relevant, at all, in over 10 years... Texas is no more a "mecca" than Nebraska or Penn St.... great history, but "mecca"..... Tom, go kiss some more players on the lips...

I hear you, but Texas also is the main university in that state, which is a hotbed of football talent. So it's different than Nebraska or Penn State.

"the Mecca of college football" Does that make College Station the "Medina"?

I’m glad you put CST. For a moment, I thought you were referring to Hawaiian Time.
