ESPN NFL Draft analyst Todd McShay updated his mock draft 2.0 this week and has LSU cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. going No. 10 overall to the New York Jets.

Here's what McShay had to say about Stingley's draft stock. Per On3Sports:
quote:

“Then the New York Jets, back on the board again. No. 10 — Derek Stingley,” revealed McShay. “If you go back to 2019 and study his tape, he might have the highest grade of any player in this draft. That’s how good he was. He’s a shutdown cover corner. Six interceptions as a freshman that year. But the last two years things fell apart at LSU. He had some injuries, only played in ten games.

“So there’s a lot of debate in war rooms throughout the NFL right now, where does Stingley belong? But I think if he turns it back on, he could be the best cornerback in this draft when it’s all said and done.”

He has a Lisfranc injury of his foot. He will never be the player he was in his freshman year. He better get whatever payday he can from whatever team is foolish enough to draft him and give him upfront money.

He did nothing the last two seasons at LSU.

A third to fourth round pick would be good for him. He is a risky pick.

If he shows to be a lockdown corner all of you will be on here posting “DBU”. He is from LSU, and I will pull for his success. Of course I would have liked to see him handle it differently, but he is not on an island at this point.

Most of the comments here are from a bunch of idiot mouth breathers who can't seem to think for themselves. They just parrot the talking points they see on this site, which to anyone rational, makes them seem like an idiot. Yet, they get a couple of likes on here and think they're geniuses. As a fan base, we lack self awareness. It's clear anyone except LSU fans on this board, could see that LSU was a dumpster fire these last couple of years. Without Burrow and Aranda holding things together, it probably would have started long before. It's like all the players going in to the portal the last few years showed y'all nothing. When most people saw that and realized there were some deep issues within LSU, the idiots here just kept blaming the players. In reality, the blame lies on coach O and for everyone to be shitting on a player like Stingley who was hurt and probably tired of playing for a coach who had his own priorities. Anyone who's mad at Stingley is an idiot and really needs to look inward towards themselves because their hate is coming from something greater than just hating on a player for doing what's best for him in a shitty situation. It's like this cartoon pic of the building burning with the dog just sitting there and saying "this is fine" ( Image Link). It's like all of you would just sit there and burn in the fire because to y'all, that would seemingly be like a captain going down with his ship, when in reality, it's just your dumbass sitting there getting burned while firefighters were trying to get you out. The same thing was going on with LSU, except in many cases, a lot of them were smart enough to get out. And sure, it's admirable for the ones who stuck around and saw things through, but unlike Stingley, many of them didn't have an injury that could linger around and affect their draft stock. Also, unlike Stingley, none of them are/were projected to be 1st round picks. So, while y'all continue to shite on Stingley, just try and remember that 2019 probably doesn't go the way it did without him. The number of big plays he made that year alone makes me thankful he was a Tiger and I'll forever be grateful for him coming here and playing for a coach, that anyone with half a brain, knew wouldn't be here for the long haul. And for the ones holding it against Stingley that he sat out the rest of the year to get right physically, after already going through a shitty 2020 season, as I said, y'all need to look inward because y'all's hate is coming from something deeper. Possibly, a hate for your own life and being miserable day in and day out and having to sit your fat arse in traffic every day and go home to y'all's fatass wives with their "my husband is oil field trash making that oil field cash" sticker on her 2009 Yukon. I'm sure at least that's what it is for a few of y'all. The others, probably just mad at the world because y'all have little peckers, so to make yourself feel a little better, you hate on players for a team you consider yourself a fan of, all because they're looking out for what's best for them, just as most of you idiots would drag up if ole Billy was putting your life in danger while rigging up the next pipe to to fly. But, it's ok for you to do that, but it's not ok for the players who played their asses off for LSU, while playing for a coach who was clearly in over his head from day 1 on the job, to look out for their best interests and to do so by getting healthy going in to the draft, a draft that which have a much bigger impact on not only their lives, but the potential to affect their family for generations to come........ TL;DR - We have the biggest bunch of idiot fans in all of college sports who have a mindset still set in the 60s and 70s and how college sports were back then. It's amazing any of them know how to post on a message board, when their fatass wives allow them to, of course. Thank you to Stingley for everything you did and all the other players as well. At least you'll be going in to the draft as an LSU tiger, unlike someone like Ricks. I wouldn't really blame Ricks either, except he transferred to Bama.

'If you look back at his 2019 tape'... huge issue. Somebody is going to take a shot and throw big money at him, that will prove a bad investment.

Just wait until his dad threatens to pull him from the team on the local sports radio when there’s a contract dispute or a trade deal fell through.

I love all the people that defend quitting. Look it’s the nature of college football right now so stop defending it. He quit on his team. The NFL is looking for players who show up everyday, play hurt and give 100%. It’s a job not a choice. Somebody will take a chance because it’s a high reward risk.

People like you always say that the NFL won't take someone who, as you put it, "quit on his team". Yet, time and time again, people like you are proven wrong. You think the NFL gives a shite that he wanted to get out of the dumpster fire that was LSU under O these last couple years and get himself healthy for the NFL? I swear LSU fans are the biggest bunch of idiots in all of football. Our fans continue to hate on their own more than any other fan base could dream of. And all because some players wanted out of a clearly shitty situation and a few of them wanted out to get right before the NFL draft. Now, I'm not a huge fan of his dad's, but that's just the reality of players in any big time sport who are at the top of their sport going in to the pros. The difference with Stingley's dad, is he wasn't afraid to speak his part on radio, and for that, I respect him. And I respect him for putting his son's priorities over a coach that clearly had his own priorities, which obviously didn't include his team being the best they could be and being able to win. After LSU won in 2019, O was done. Got a divorce from his wife and things changed. He was more worried about chasing arse than doing right by and for the team he was coaching. Yet idiots like you think the NFL should and will hold that against players like Stingley. We have the biggest bunch of idiots in a collection on one site, that's pretty impressive and not something you see very often.

These comments are crazy. He is not Eli ricks, he played when he could play, he had surgery for an injury that he couldn’t play through. High ankle sprains are like hammies they take time to heal.
Stingley was a good tackler as well. Remember when people questioned him and the next game he blew that kid up to force a scoop n score? He did stuff like that a few times

Stingley was a hell of a tackler when he wanted to be. Remember last time he was called out, next game he blew that kid up and forced a scoop and score

No way he falls in the draft. But the higher he goes the crappier the team he goes to… will he be uninterested on a crappy nfl team like he was on a crappy Lsu team?

Have to admit Im indifferent on the kid. Kind of like how he was indifferent as an LSU Tiger. I'm no NFL GM but i would pass on him.
user avatar
saint tiger22551 months
That's why you would never make it as an NFL gm and most of us on this board would never make it. We see everything through being LSU fans and wanting what we think is best for LSU. Many times it's not even what's best for LSU, but what we perceive at that time, and when you look back at it, what us fans wanted usually was completely wrong. Just like you saying you would pass on Stingley because you hold it against him that he was hurt and wanted to get right for the NFL draft and do what's best for him. Just as his head coach was doing the same, as O was only looking out for himself.

Played hard during the 2019 season, when they were winning. When things weren't so good in 2020 and 2021, he looked disinterested and detached. If you're on the field, you should give a 100%... he quit.
user avatar

Yep, half the team quit in 2021 when the going got tough.

He did play well in 2019, although I cant forget him getting toasted for 80 yards late in the 4th qtr by that gump receiver. Highlight for me was that game changing pick against Florsux in a very tight game at the time. Best of Luck, just wish LSU could have seen more of him on the field the last 2 years.

Stingley would be a steal if he fell to #10.

Maybe. I’m not sure he is a corner that would come up and take on those big backs like Fournette. He will sign a big contract. Let’s se his production. I’m not convinced.
user avatar

Not sure, he had some moments where he didn't look great. He got burned severely by Alabama. He's one hell of an athlete but he only played one whole year which is kind of a shame.
