LSU's starting defensive back, Sage Ryan, has entered the NCAA transfer portal, according to a report from Lonn Phillips.

Ryan confirmed the news with a message on social media.

The former five-star prospect from Lafayette, La., was initially recruited as a safety but played all over the secondary for LSU, eventually settling into the cornerback position at the back end of this season.

He registered 35 tackles, 4.5 tackles for a loss, and three pass breakups this season.

If Ryan departs the program, he will be the ninth player to enter the transfer portal this offseason. He is the only one out of the group who played significant starting snaps this year.

Maybe he’ll stick it out in Baton Rouge. Give the guy a break and he will get better. He had some real positives this year

The best college coaches in the country have NFL talent
evaluation skills and NFL quality support staff assisting with the evaluation and coaching of the players, to get the most out of those players. The best coach in the country does not miss on evaluating top talent. Ryan Sage is top talent that needs to be put in a stable position to maximize his skills.

He never came close to performing at a 5 star level. Now that he is gone, people are upset simply b/c he is from home?

Nobody hates LSU like LSU fans...it's the truth.

Letting Kevin Faulk and Corey Raymond go is starting to sting pretty badly.

Not good for LSU recruiting the Acadiana area. Trev Faulk’s nephew and stepdad is training guru is Reggie Williams. Not good two CLA players entering the portal.

Anyone on here bashing a player who plays for their favorite team is a POS. You don’t deserve good things

No. He is undersized.

Hate to see any Tiger leave early but Sage is the perfect example of how the star-rating of high school recruits is a bit misleading. He never reached the potential that is worthy of 5 stars. He will be missed, but we will survive!

It's a sad state of affairs when your "best DB" leaves and he's not even "average"...need a new DBs coach, who can coach and recruit

The picture explains it all. Safeties need to thump...he arm tackled like a corner and covered like a LB.
Hope he succeeds somewhere outside the SEC.

The coaches stood by him all season and he leaves. Disappointed in Sage.

Sad we are losing another player on the back end. If only he showed up during games. He might not have been asked to leave.

You really think with our LACK OF DEPTH at DB that he was asked to leave?? Silly man. He may not have been GREAT but he showed up and played his best out if position setting a new trend from guys like ricks, stingley, chestnut who flat out QUIT. He stayed true to LSU and tried his damndest, that's all I ask. He'll go far in this world. Good luck Sage.

Just asking for a friend... but how exactly is his quitting on the team any different than Stingley, Ricks, etc?!?!? I mean I doubt seriously he was told to leave, but I do think he saw the writing on the wall... and... quit.

Glad he came to LSU....he just never worked out...I think his size limited him at safety and his speed limited him at CB...I wish him well.
