Multiples sources are reporting that LSU and offensive coordinator Matt Canada will part ways after the Citrus Bowl on Jan. 1.

Canada was hired by head coach Ed Orgeron to be the teams' offensive coordinator and quarterback coach back in December, joining the Tigers after just one year as Pitt's offensive coordinator. Per The Advocate:
quote:

Canada signed a three-year contract last December paying him $1.5 million per year as the highest-paid offensive coordinator in college football. The school would owe him about $3 million to be paid in monthly installments over the life of the contract, through 2020. That amount is offset by any future compensation Canada earns at another job, according to a copy of his contract.

Canada is accustomed to quick stops during his coaching journey. LSU is his fifth school in the past seven seasons, including Pitt (2016), N.C. State (2013-15), Wisconsin (2012) and Northern Illinois (2011).

Hugh Freeze or Kendal Briles... we don’t need another Ensminger debacle like the Alabama game from last year.

"we don’t need another Ensminger debacle like the Alabama game from last year." I agree that LSU's offense really underperformed against AL last year. But IIRC, not many offenses did well against AL last year. OTOH, Steve Ensminger should be given a world of credit for stepping into a ____storm, stabilizing the situation and putting up some good offensive numbers in most of the games, all while using someone else's offense. I'm not worried about SE as the OC because I'm convinced he doesn't want the full time gig. I wouldn't be surprised if he became the OC for the bowl game, though. That all depends on how well CEO and Canada get along at this point in time and what kind of agreement the lawyers come up w/. Canada may have some financial incentives for the bowl game, as well. But if CEO and Canada got along well, there wouldn't be reports of LSU and Canada parting ways.

Can we pay aranda double and let him fill both roles?
user avatar
Perfect Circle76 months
Aranda will be gone within the next two seasons. Someone will be willing to take a chance on him as a HC. Will LSU demote O to make Aranda its HC? Or will LSU keep O and let Aranda go? How do LSU fans feel about this ?
user avatar
CaliTigerHB76 months
LSU will not denote O to hire Aranda as HC. That will not happen. Aranda will be gone in less than two years and O will still be the HC at LSU. Let's just hope he can hire great coordinators because he needs them to be great
user avatar
tigerbutt76 months
Actually surprised Aranda didn't get picked up as a head coach with all the openings that became available. Aranda is too good to stay here for more than 3 years.

When O stopped trying to force his “vision” on the offense we suddenly got really fricking good. It’s a shame we can’t keep a quality coach like Canada a few more years

Can't argue, liked the offense, but anything after an LM offense would be exciting. Canada may be an offensive guru, but he may also have an offensive personality. Who knows besides the Captain & Joe?

Have to agree, i mean you could tell he couldn’t run everything he wanted, didnt have his personel.. id be willing to bet that his offense would be pretty good in year 2/3

OR... you know like maybe after 2-3 TRUE freshman finally got some experience and gelled with the rest of the line, maybe that had a little more to do with it.

Frick him then.. I dont care why he's leaving! He's gone! Now go get us the best OC in the country weather its college or pros we can afford it!! Someone who wants to be here not for a check or a come up!!!

Yes please throw money at more flashy names so we can let them go after a year and pay them and we can hear BlackTiger89 say frick him again next year. So much fun.

Head coaches and coordinators have rifs all the time. Saban and Kiffin couldn’t get along and Kiffin is gone. Ultimately, the HC gets a little credit win they win, but all the criticism when they lose. Therefore, if he feels there’s a problem, he must deal with it. As for the so called meddling by O in Canada’s offense, I suspect it had more to do with getting LSU back to physical, SEC style football than the finesse offense Canada was employing. I don’t think Canada is a bad coordinator, but he didn’t do anything to blow me away either. The Tigers numbers on offense were about the same as last year. If O is guilty of anything, it may be that he simply hired a guy with a history of moving around a lot, and not being a good fit with the personalities we have here in Louisiana. Some people come here and love it. Others can’t wait to leave. Everyone criticized Sean Payton for not getting along with his D-Coordinator. Last time I checked, the Saints D looks just fine as the Saints prepare for the playoffs. The main thing is there are so many things that go on behind the scenes that fans don’t know. O may be an a-hole! Canada may be a prick! Who knows? Doesn’t matter! In the end, we should support our coach and our players and trust that they will get it right. It’s not like Canada is irreplaceable. LSU will be just fine without him. And good luck to him in the future and thanks for being a Tiger!

Canada is overrated. 2016 offensive numbers > 2017

I agree. Wasn't overly impressed by him.

So does LSU not have to payout his contract? if not i'm not worried. LSU can pay a top OC to come to LSU. If Emsminger is hired as OC then O has one more season then he's done.
user avatar
MardiGrasCajun76 months
Yes, we have to pay his buy-out. $3 million over the length of the contract which ends in 2020. However, this is offset when Canada gets another job. I fully expect Canada to have another job quickly. He is good at what he does whether he's a good fit here or not (or anywhere for that matter.) Seems he "may" have a personality problem? Dunno....that's a lot of job hopping though over the years.
user avatar
LSUDAN176 months
So how many jobs has Canada had in last 6-7 years:. 5. May say more about Canada. Usually you get a head gig by that time.
user avatar
Barbellthor76 months
Part of me is worried on O's side. He "bristles" and declares he's the head coach, so it'll be done his way. But...this is 5 OC spots in 7 years for Canada? As mentioned below, this could tell more about Canada's unworkability than O's inability to be a head coach; that is, maybe this really is best for us? If Canada truly is leaving, I hope it's for the best. Now go get the best, O!
user avatar
MaHittaMaHitta76 months
Spot on. It is obvious that O has problems almost everywhere he goes.

Canada improved 7 of the 8 teams he was the OC of from where they were before he arrived. He's not the problem.

Did any of you negatigers stop and think that maybe O doesn’t like him because he didn’t do what he expected. Why do we all assume he will make a terrible hire at O coordinator? Give him a chance before you bash him.

Also, the last time a coach left our staff, an instant improvement was hired in what, literally minutes? We have four days to play our bowl game. Who says we don't have someone lined up, especially if we knew this was coming for some time now? Here's to positivity anyway.
