ESPN College Football writer Sam Khan Jr. says LSU's chances of repeating as National Champions next season will all come down to how well quarterback Myles Brennan leads the team.

Here's what he had to say:
quote:

4. LSU Tigers
For a reigning champ, the Tigers sure have a lot of work to do. First, Ed Orgeron must replace his departed coaches (offensive assistant Joe Brady, defensive coordinator Dave Aranda). A host of key players who are headed to the NFL must be replaced. Fortunately for Orgeron, the latter part is customary in Baton Rouge; LSU is no stranger to early draft departures and recruits well enough to stem the personnel losses. But the biggest question is at quarterback, where someone must replace Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow. Myles Brennan, a soon-to-be-fourth-year junior, is the likely option. He doesn't have to be Burrow to lift the Tigers back to a title, but he does have to operate the offense at a high level and show poise in big moments the way his predecessor did. --Sam Khan Jr.

Brennan is better than people think. He will have Terrace Marshall, Jmar Chase, McMath, and Dillon. The receiving corp will be lethal. For some reason I see LSU making a run again this year.

Brennan is somewhere between Etling and Burrow on the suck to awesome spectrum. I just hope he’s closer to Joe on that spectrum.

I don’t personally know Brennan, but I think the kid gets a bad rap because he comes from a wealthy family and people think that makes him soft. But I do remember vividly when he was being recruited and I remember him being all the talk of the boards in high school when was doing the 7/7 circuits around the country and taking home all the awards. Tua and “Sunshine” from Clemson we’re both on that same circuit, yet it was Brennan who won the awards. Now all of a sudden with 3 yrs of studying and learning(2 behind a heisman trophy winner), we are questioning wether this kid can play? 12 thousand passing yards in HS. This kids going to be fine. No he’s not going to be Joe, but he also won’t ever under throw wide open receivers streaking down the field like Joe often did because he lacked the arm strength. Joe will be Drew Brees in the NFL, average arm strength and a great ability to read defenses and find open receivers. Brennan will develop into a more average mental QB with the arm strength talent to get the ball where it needs to be before the defense can react to the speed of the ball.

Brennan does have better arm-strength but I didn't see any of these under-throws by Joe that you speak of. Was very impressed by his arm strength vs. Georgia particularly. He was chucking the ball 50 yards downfield right on the money. Also, Brees led record setting offenses throwing the ball downfield. Not sure how you believe he never had arm-strength. He's over 40 now man.

Who knows what our record will be. My guess is 10-2 or 11-0. Miles will be fine. Plenty of talent. It will come down to just 4 games; Bama, at Auburn, at Florida and at ATM. Geaux Tigers…

If LSU goes 11-0, what will happen in our 12th game vs A&M? The suspense is killing me...

These reporters don’t know shit! They never saw our Championship coming! Even after LSU said, “We Comin!” All summer long!

I had a guy from OU tell me that LSU will go down and not be relevant for a while. I replied that I would rather win a Championship game an average span of every 6 years than be the perrenial bridesmaid every year and not win a Championship game in 20 years.

Never trust a fan base that gives the horns down when they are playing us. Not the sharpest folks.

I've had several OU fans, locally, tell me that this LSU team was by far the best team that Oklahoma has ever played. Ever. Yes, there is the fraction of their base that is still, and will remain, utterly delusional. But most of their rational fans have been humbled this year and have realized that steamrolling through a pathetically weak conference every year with no defense will not sharpen their iron enough to cut through to another National Championship win. I've lived in Oklahoma since the late 80s and I've never seen OU fans brought down off their high horse like they are right now.

I live in Phoenix, and I've had several Ohio State fans do the same thing. Best team they've ever seen, best QB, etc. But they weren't sore losers; they felt like Ohio State had their shot.

Even though LSU football has been a relevant program for 20 years now they often get the proverbial shaft from the media. If I remember right LSU has won 3 National Championships, had one of the most dominant teams of the last 50 years and every year sends beaucoup players to the NFL . So why is LSU slighted by an obviously biased media that can only fathom Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State in the perpetual mix for National Championships in the foreseeable future. Forbes magazine in their article even slights the Tigers (LINK /). ESPN is doing this same thing in this article. There is still so much doubt towards Coach Orgeron‘a ability to sustain.

With Pelini already on board, I think replacing outgoing players and getting solid quarterback play is a necessity every year for LSU. I'm hoping this happens more often than not for a long time to come.

Wow, coach O does has his work cut out for him. Coaches, a great group of defensive players, and Superman have left the building. But he’s been here before and did the most unbelievable job. So, i have NO doubt Coach O will address all their needs and put another great LSU team on the field.

I think mechanically, Brennan can be a better pure thrower than Burrow (yes I know that's a big statement). What will be next-to-impossible to replace from Burrow will be the mental part of the game, the pocket manipulation, and the grit to take big hits and just get back up and play even better.

Plus his pre-snap reads. He understood the game so well.

Wrong........Brennan 'IS' a better pure thrower. Brennan doesn't have to be as good as Joe. Just be Brennan to the best of his ability.

I have been saying this since Brennan got on campus! He broke all Brett Farve's high school records in Mississippi, and he and Burrow where neck and neck in the spring. Burrow got the nod because of experience! It's well known that Brennan was the best pure-passer on LSU's roster this season. Will he put up numbers like JB? No! But he will put up numbers good enough to make defenses continue to gameplan for LSU's passing game!

We have to beat bama or hope we sneak in as a one loss team. Or should I say bama has to beat us. IMO, Brennan will have a very good year skill wise, hopefully he displays some leadership skills also.

I love everyone sleeping on LSU next year. Brennan is going to surprise a lot of people. He won the lottery sitting behind Burrow two years, saw what can happen in just 2 years and frankly in just one. All he did was throw for 15,000 yards in HS, 4,000 yards senior year, 69% completion rate, 48 td's and 3 int. Yeah he is going to be good. Plus the D is going to be way better than 30th. Bo had us top 3 three years in a row so Brennan will have better help on the D side. Chase, Marshall, etc gonna ball out.

Short term fix, yes, but bad long term effects. What will that tell top qb recruits that want to come to LSU as freshmen, put their time in, and have the coaches pull in a grad transfer to undermine the job they though was theirs? If Brennan has not developed as expected, go for it, but be open about why.
