Did LSU Dodge A Bullet When Bryce Underwood Flipped His Commitment To Michigan?

What once looked like a devastating recruiting loss for LSU might look much different in hindsight.

Bryce Underwood, the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2025 recruiting class, was committed to LSU for nearly a year before flipping to Michigan just weeks before the Early Signing Period.

Underwood's flip came as Michigan put together a massive NIL package reportedly worth around $12 million. Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison and his wife, Jolin, were among those credited with providing Michigan's NIL collective with financial resources that helped make the flip happen.

At the time, losing Underwood was a crushing blow for LSU and then-head coach Brian Kelly.

Less than two years later, Underwood is under the microscope at Michigan following inconsistent play and a rough start to his sophomore season.

Things intensified this week when Michigan coach Kyle Whittingham said Underwood remains the Wolverines' starting quarterback "right now," but made it clear the job isn't set in stone.

Underwood then drew even more attention for his reaction when reporters asked him about Whittingham's comments.

But there's also an interesting butterfly effect to consider from LSU's perspective.

Had Underwood stayed committed and developed into LSU's quarterback of the future, perhaps he buys Kelly more time in Baton Rouge.

Instead, Underwood flipped, Kelly was eventually fired during the 2025 season, and LSU's coaching search ultimately led to Lane Kiffin taking over the program.

Now Kiffin has LSU looking like a national championship contender, while Underwood's future at Michigan is suddenly being questioned.

There's obviously plenty of time for Underwood to turn things around.

But considering how devastating his flip appeared for LSU at the time, it's fair to wonder:

Did the Tigers actually dodge a bullet?

Bet Lane could turn this guy into a stud. That school has been a defensive school for awhile. He might be part of the problem from an work ethic standpoint but he's definitely not getting the coaching either.

Did LSU dodge a bullet? Yes and kiss it Portnoy. Underwood looks like attitude is oozing from him.

I mean he took 10 million over 2 million who wouldn’t do that? Hope the kid turns it around

That's a shame his performance is underwhelming, "No One Said!"

At this point even if Underwood does improve and turn his play around and ends up being worth the hype by the end of his career (looking very unlikely but just for sake of argument), it will still be worth missing out on him just to hasten the BK firing and getting Kiffin, and lighting a fire under the boosters. All those factors are much more important than one recruit.

Not going to be popular…..but Nuss didn’t do any better and also was making millions per year as well.
user avatar
Agreed, but he was injured the time he played last year.

Yeah, but Nuss was injured and wrapping up his collegiate career. BU would’ve been here for at least 3 and bought BK more time.

Because he went to Michigan and everything that has happened there. You cant put this on a kid. 12 million probably ruined him right there. But who knows what would have happened if he comes to LSU.

This is what happens when you chase money and not your dreams. His dream was to play for the tigers. Well look what money gotten him. Just my opinion.

Problem is we give kids like him all this money for avenging nothing. NIL needs to be based on performance. There needs to be a max NIL for incoming freshman and it needs to be low. If they amount to anything then let them get what the market will pay.

Lane kiffin could fix him. Not sure Sankey would allow that though. He wants to have total control over our institution.
