The Devin White targeting talk continues on...

The college football crew over at CBS Sports had a heated discussion this week about the controversial call that will keep LSU's star linebacker out for the first half against No. 1 Alabama in two week.

The conversation started off with Brian Jones, Randy Cross, and Aaron Taylor all agreeing that it was a bad call.

Cross added that the hit made on Tennessee quarterback Jarrett Guarantano by Alabama linebacker Mack Wilson was more violent and should have been called targeting.

Things got interesting when Rick Neuheisel questioned: "would anybody be saying anything about this but for the fact that he is going to miss this first half of the Alabama game?"

Jones was quick to respond...
quote:

"I would," Jones said. "And I say it to you every Saturday because I don't know what the rule is, there's no uniformity, and it's very subjective. And it seems to me, if you play for Alabama you can get away with it but if you play for anybody else you are not going to get away with it."

"We see it on a weekly basis. You got a guy (Raekwon Davis) throwing haymakers and nothing happens to him."

"What do you mean?" Neuheisel asked. "Nick Saban made him sit the whole first half."

"I'm glad he did, Jones responded. "The official was sitting there watching him. Which haymaker did he miss? The first, the second, or all three?"
Later on in the conversation, host Adam Zucker asked Jones if there more to this than just bad calls...
quote:

"And it gets reviewed in Birmingham and you're saying that you think there is more involved than just pure judgment that it was targeting?"

"Well I see flags thrown on certain teams and I see them not thrown on certain teams," Jones said. "And i'll leave it at that."

It is about damn time people stop kidding themselves and avoiding the fact that Bama has everything stacked in their favor.

This whole permanent opponent thing is a damn joke. It is configured where LSU and UF have to play each other early in the year and one of them will pick up a loss every damn year while Bama rotates UGA and UF and has Tennessee as their permanent opponent while Auburn gets UGA. I understand there was some supposed traditional games which this permanent opponent was supposedly addressing but all you had to do is put Bama and Auburn in the SEC East along with Tennessee and UGA and let UF come to the West and they can play their damn "rivalry games" without effecting the rest of the entire damn conference.

The SEC should not have permanent cross over teams. They should rotate everybody equally outside their division. This setup is ridiculous.

I will bet anyone any amount of money that Nick Saban WOULD NOT have suspended Raekwon Davis for the 1st half if their next game would have been against LSU!!!

The sad thing is that Bama is a great program with great collegiate athletes and a great coach, and they don’t need the help to win a lot of games, but the perception that is created by the bias when it comes to subjective calls in the grey area (and the not so subjective calls being missed) are rightfully bringing their overwhelming dominance into question. You give a great program just a slight edge, and, boom, the greatest dynasty in college football history. I have a ton of respect for Bama and think they would still be a dynasty, but I don’t respect the SEC office/officials because they seem overly committed and even addicted to Bama’s success which brings into question whether that dominance is as total as it has been. I hope the SEC takes note, and allows the other great programs in the conference to play on an even playing field so we can enjoy the best teams competing without the sour taste.

Exactly. And they better make sure they call the game fairly on November 3rd fair or this subject is going to get a lot more attention. A lot of eyes, not only around the SEC but nationally, on the SEC refs and office right now b/c of the DW call. I think it opened a lot of eyes on the situation. Hopefully the rule gets changed in the offseason and an appeal process involving the NCAA is created.

I have zero respect for them. I debate if the state of Alabama should have even existed and should have been an extension of Georgia or combined with Mississippi to form another state.

It is a damn shame that it even has to come to this point. They been getting away with this shite for years! How about start with not having Alabama graduates as the replay official in Birmingham. Oh wait, how about stop having Alabama graduates as the lead ref for Alabama regular season games. You idiots don't think there may just an inch of bias there? I hope the talk continues until an NCAA investigation is launched!

“I hope the talk continues until an NCAA investigation is launched!”

Do you seriously think that Mark Emmert would go after his old pal Saban?

Likely won't happen, but it damn well should (investigation). We aren't the only collegiate fan base who thinks something smells rotten as hell in Denmark, and has for years. Or, in this case, that little stretch between Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. Yes, Saban is a genius, in both coaching and recruiting. Yes, they're financially loaded, to say the least. But how does a singular program become and remain so steadily dynastic, and as utterly untouchable in comparison with the rest of the entire country? It's past time for serious investigation into many aspects of this program and its operations and connections, the biased play calling being only one of many glaring issues. We can start with the openly biased penalties (or lack thereof), and then maybe we can move into forcing this program to get a schedule that is at least equivalent in strength to other SEC season schedules. If you're going to be touted as the gold standard year in and year out, and regularly pimped by everything from league officials to the talking heads, you should at least man the hell up. Ahh, silly me. Always the idealist.

All you have to do is ask yourself one question. Would an Alabama player be ejected from the game for that shove?

Let's not forget the three missed holding calls on Jalen Hurt's TD run two years ago when Bama won 10-0. I saw today that Glenn Guilbeau suggests that the reason that Alabama is winning so much more than LSU is that Alabama is better. I think that this is probably true, but that does not also mean that Alabama does not benefit from the thumb on the scale that game officials and the SEC office gives them regularly.

Duly noted. However Ensmingers office that year and Miles offense or lack thereof, the previous 4/5 years contributed to those heart wrenching losses. Miles was at his best in the 2010 win vs the Gumps.

Neuheisel used to be sort of anti SEC but in the past couple of years he seems to be a Saban lackey and Bama mouthpiece. He can't stop praising Bama and Saban on his Sirius radio show.

Glad the national media is getting on board with this. I am not afraid of Bama and know LSU players are not either. But it would be nice to play them with all things being equal and not having to overcome the refs.

Thank you Brian Jones for speaking the truth! You nailed it!

For years I have watched Saban crew referees' arse on the side line all game. Then lo and behold Bama gets a favorable PI or holding call(s). SO, they are damn right that Bama gets favorable calls.

Really, this is what you can't wait for?!? Geez some of you guys need medication. I live near BR and work around Tiger fans all day long every day and never hear crazy shite like this. Is it the anonymity that causes you guys to off the deep end?!? Unhealthy to live with such animosity with someone quoting games back to 2007! Good luck with the game and I hope you guys seek psychological attention. Just wow!
