LSU Sports Photography - Gus Stark
LSU coach Brian Kelly revealed to The Advocate that backup offensive lineman Kimo Makane'ole is moving to defensive tackle during spring practice.

Makane'ole, a redshirt sophomore from Niceville, Fla. will be entering his fourth season with the Tigers in 2024. He has played in nine games over the last two seasons as a backup lineman. He is listed at 6'4, 310-pounds on LSU's roster.

Kelly added that freshman defensive end Ahmad Breaux “will probably take some snaps” on the interior defensive line this spring. He was recruited as a three-star edge rusher from Ruston, La., and is listed at 6'3, 250-pounds.

Shuffling players around to add depth at defensive tackle is something Kelly hinted at early this month.

If Breaux looks to be able to play at 285 or 290, this might work out, long-term, although Edge to DT seems an unlikely transition. And, I just can't recall a OL to DL ever working out.

CBK needs to get two DL and one RB also after the Holly situation. Problem crossing over from OL to DL is technique and experience. Not really a good idea. Hit the portal.

I could be wrong but aren't you in a bad shape if you have to resort to this?

Yeah, but also it's spring and we just don't have the bodies.

After last year, I'd be open to see some quick guys on the defensive line. We looked like we were 'pass blocking' on defense. Like literally 'holding the block'

If my memory serves me right, didn’t Miles do this with several guys? Seemed like we always had a little swap between OL and DL along with WR and DB.

Barksdale was never really on defense, he was a DL recruit that was switched to OL immediately. Guys like Will Blackwell, Carnell Stewart, Lyle Hitt and Chris Davenport were actually DL at one point (if only briefly) before switching.

This could be good for Kimo. He doesn't seem like he wants to go anywhere else, or he would have by now. You never know, maybe he'll find his calling.

Is he Samoan? Gotta keep someone to do the haka with Fehoko's dad...

We really need to start getting top players at DT like we are now doing on OL. LSU has not been good at DT for over a decade. I believe Bo Davis will get us there. You aint winning the Sec with Avg to below avg DT play.

I presume Khai Prean will remain at CB after moving from WR.
And Harold Perkins is moving back from SAM to WILL.

I would have bet anything that they would have moved one of those big arse DEs inside like Shand or Jones. I always thought they would move Dylan Carpenter inside too, but I guess not yet.

It would be funny if DT position turns out to be Kimo best position.

One of Washington's big Pacific islander DTs this year was a converted offensive lineman. It can be done!

Interesting. 6'4 310 is the ideal size for a DT

I know it's a bit of a generalization but I have always found that Pacific Islanders are very light on their feet (both quick and fast) for such huge, strong guys. He may end up being an exceptional DT in both run and pass defense. ANd I may be putting on the P&G glasses in anticipation lol.
