What's funny about that song (which is admittedly catchy) is that all of the land features described in the song are in fact in western Virginia, not West Virginia. I guess Denver thought that extra syllable made the song work better.

He only mentions two proper nouns, The Blue Ridge Mountains and the Shenandoah River. Both are in Virginia and West Virginia.

It's so weird to me how popular this song is internationally. I've been all over and no matter where I am people go crazy and belt out Country Roads when it comes on
I've been in some dumpy bar in the Middle East and when Country Roads came on everyone went crazy. Watching a bunch of muslims who probably will never set foot in the US belt out Country Roads was pretty funny
