Men's Basketball Coach Big Board

Here's a look at some of the top candidates for the vacant LSU MBB head-coaching position.
1. Scott Drew (Baylor)
Has experience taking over a program facing major NCAA violations. Drew actually grew up in Baton Rouge. His father Homer was an assistant under Dale Brown for 4 seasons before taking a head coaching position in the midwest. The Drew family is still close with Coach Brown.
2. Eric Musselman (Arkansas)
Former LSU Associate Head Coach. Great motivator and recruiter with extensive college and NBA experience. Quickly turned Nevada then Arkansas into elite programs. Knows how to effectively leverage the transfer portal to facilitate quick turnarounds.
3. Kelvin Sampson (Houston)
Just a stone's throw away in Houston, Sampson is also a perennial winner. Houston was a joke when he took over and has since turned into a Final Four team with championship aspirations.
4. None of those people are coming. None. Get it out of your heads.
5. Let's talk about plausible candidates.
6. Tom Crean (Unemployed)
Former Marquette, Indiana, Georgia head coach. Big name, older coach. A name most boosters will recognize.
7. Cuonzo Martin (Unemployed)
Will provide LSU with a much-needed diversity hire. Martin's team aren't really ever bad, they just aren't good. There have been rumors of him landing recruits under shady circumstances, but that's no longer a concern due to the NIL ruling.
8. Rick Pitino (Iona)
Like Mulkey, Pitino is a Hall-of-Fame head coach. Like Coach O, Pitino does a great job of hosting recruits and making them feel welcomed. Although he doesn't have a national championship, he did coach the winning team in the national championship game.
9. Jim Harrick Sr. (Cal State Northridge—assistant coach)
Unlike Pitino, Harrick does have a national championship from his time at UCLA. Harrick Sr. may be inclined to take the job since he's reportedly looking for an opportunity to bring his son back into college coaching, and LSU may be the perfect spot. Junior's 10-year show cause recently expired and he's well regarded by his student-athletes as a great teacher.
10. Tubby Smith (unemployed)
Tubby resigned midseason at High Point so that his son could get a job, so he's available. Tubby has head-coaching experience at 16 different institutions, including head-coaching runs at 5 different SEC schools.
Wildcard. Geert Hammink
The former LSU legend and first round pick is currently the head coach for ZZ Leiden in the BNXT, the national basketball league of the Netherlands. He was named 2021 Dutch Basketball League Coach of the Year, putting him in the same company as Dutch coaching legends like Herman van den Belt and Toon van Helfteren.

John Brady - transition through some dark years. Then get your guy.

Edit: my apologies. Pitino does have a national title. I forgot about the '96 Kentucky championship.

I think You clearly out a lot of time into this post.
But did you consider instead of posting this just eating shite?

As a Hoosier basketball fan because of my dad, Tom Crean would be atrocious.
Martin would honestly maybe be the best “lame duck hire” we could get.
Pitino has stated he wants to stay at Iona the rest of his career. Small catholic school.
Tubby too old and washed, even as a lame duck coach.
The candidates we are gonna get this time around are less than ideal to say the least. Absolutley agree with you some LSU fans need to get it out of their heads that we are about to hire some major Basketball coach. Wade was the best we were gonna get.

Best comment by far
But he did win one at Kentucky in the mid 90s

Can we just get Will Wade to say he's sorry and we can start off on a new foot?

Although he doesn't have a national championship,
1995-96 Kentucky says hello.

Mark Few should be #2 on your list. He ain’t coming either though. Scott Woodward is gonna go after a big name and get turned down by a lot of them.

That 2nd tier list of coaches is fricking awful. I’d rather let one of the players coach than employ Tom fricking Crean

Not like this shite list is even real but I’ll play along. Sampson, Pitino, and Harrick all have NCAA baggage so those aren’t happening.

Scott is a "big game hunter" so his big name needs to deliver and deliver FAST. We finished 8th in a complete rebuild under Wade in year 1 with preseason 14 predictions.
I am gonna hold his hire to an impossible standard because apparently LSU has the resources to be a national title threat year in and out like Kentucky and the blue bloods.

What about someone like Austin Claunch? Really young (32) coach who would definitely make the jump to a big program. Not a big body of work but has a 65% winning percentage and back to back reg season conference titles at nicholls. Not an easy place to win and doesnt have a history of winning.
Probably too much of a reach but just making conversation.

No one is touching the Houston coach… especially us at this moment

For anyone who took my post literally, EVERY SINGLE NAME WAS A JOKE FOR OBVIOUS REASONS.
If we're talking about legitimate candidates, I think Joe Pasternack is one of the top names to watch. He's from Louisiana and has a reputation as an elite recruiter. He's turned UCSB into a great team despite limited resources. I think that would be a home run.
Another name is Baylor Associate HC Jerome Tang. He's been with Drew at Baylor since day 1. Tang's spent his entire adult life in Houston and Waco. He has strong ties to Houston so Baton Rouge would be an ideal location for him.
One downside is that Tang is not a big personality which may make him a poor fit at LSU. He's a quiet guy and very, very, very religious. He wears his faith on his sleeve, so not sure how well that would go with LSU amins.
Other names:
Kyle Keller (Stephen F. Austin). Worked under then replaced Brad Underwood. Wins consistently. Knows how to recruit the BR area.
Niko Medved (CSU) One of the top mid-major coaches. No LA ties.
Drew Valentine (Loyola) One of the top rising young coaches. No LA ties.
Ed Cooley (Providence) If Woodward is looking to shock people, this would be a Brian Kelly type guy. Cooley is underrated and capable of winning a national title with the proper resources.

I wasn’t shitting on you or anything by my post. I like some of the candidates you mentioned for us this time around on a basketball hire. The only way I could possibly accept the whole Wade debacle his exit, would be if we possibly got Ed Cooley out of it. African American HC, been very successful at Providence.
How do you feel right now? Do you think LSU basketball is screwed for a long time? Or do you think we will be able to hire another legit name? I’m very 50/50.
