#5 par 3 Santa Maria

#5 par 3 at Santa Maria has a bayou on the right of the green. The green and bayou are separated by a cart path and metal framed barrier.
The question is: if a ball is hit and lands on the bayou side of the metal framed barrier, but not in the water, is it OB or a lateral hazard?
There are no stakes to indicate either.
Thanks

No stakes is technically lost ball right? But I think the way it’s meant to be played is lateral hazard. I think they have a drop zone in tournaments but it’s been a while.

If its a lateral hazard the ball can be played from the hazard..
I would think that Santa Maria wouldn't want to take on the liability of someone falling down the steep bank of the bayou.
Either way, I believe there should be stakes to indicate what the hazard is.

Who would ever try and scale that bank and try and play a ball from there? Once it goes over the rail, it’s gone and take an unplayable or something and move on. This isn’t the Masters.

Nice and easy 7….
Either pulled into the pond or pushed into the creek.
Hate that hoow.

Every. Damn. Time.
I've started playing it as a 3 shot hole. PW to wide part in front of the green, wedge it close, and putt for par. Worst case is a bogey.
Then I haul arse to the next hole which is a lot easier if you're not frustrated

I used to do the same thing. Especially if pin was in the back.

I saw someone, who will remain nameless, play from the bank on the bayou...it can be played from down there...
btw...he chunked it and it rolled back into the bayou...

There is some flat ground near the railing before the steep bayou bank starts, because I watched someone play their ball from there this past weekend.
Please don't take any of this the wrong way. I'm just looking for clarification.

If there’s no stakes then just take relief from the immovable obstruction (the wall). Could probably get yourself back up on top laying one. Gotta go down there and get it though.

The only hole in one I’ve ever hit was on that hole about 15 years ago.

This.
I am not digging around in an area where I am more likely to find a water moccasin than my ball

Completely random story here but I was playing this hole by myself one afternoon a few years back. I hit my first shot and it was going right. I immediately dropped a second ball down and because I knew it was gone. I think I came up short on my second shot. I walked up to the green and see my first ball sitting pin high maybe 8ft away from the hole. I was so confused and thought someone was messing with me.
I met up with another guy in front of me playing by himself. His first thing he said was, "did you see what happened on that par 3 with your ball?" I said no I thought I lost it but didn't see anything. He said it hit off one of the small trees and shot back on the green. He was sitting on the tee infront of me and said he thought it was going in the hole. It was strange I didnt hear anything and wasnt paying attention. Never come close to hitting another shot like that in my life.

When marked correctly the red hazard line is drawn right on the inside of the cart path. Anything past that is penalty area. This also means you do no get relief from the path.
You can play from there but I don't know if you will ever find a good lie. They also do mark a DZ during tournaments about 20 yards in front of the green, typically right inside the edge of the closely mown area.

Expecting that staff to put forth any effort to make the playing experience better is a big ask.

I've witnessed a hole in one on that hole...about 15 years ago. Your initials aren't GW are they?
