re: Watford commits to LSU

Had to have him.
Fargas was always gonna be on the hot seat TY. Alleva had given her an extension LY without a raise. Now, with a new AD her chair just got warmer. She had those Sweet 16s early on, but things have gotten progressively worse since. Her teams always guard like hell, but they don’t ever seem to score any easy points. The 3-point shooting is usually bad. Those are my biggest gripes. But, I think LSU could do a lot worse for a coach. Maybe this will be the breakthrough year. Virtually everybody is back including Ayana Mitchell after being 1st Team All SEC. One of the guards needs to be a consistent. 15 ppg scorer to counter Mitchell. The best bet might be a newcomer, 5 star freshman Tiara Young. Dominique Davis is a 4 star recruit who was a big scorer as well in HS. Both are Louisiana kids which I’m sure fans will like. What Fargas has done pretty well is recruit transfers. A JUCO forward is the 3rd signee. LSU finished 9th TY. Can they get to top 5 (Missouri was 10-6) in the league? Top 4 (Kentucky 11-5)?

re: How did we not get Corey Davis?

I don't know that he had a LSU offer out of HS either. He had to go the JUCO route and became an All American at San Jacinto. Wade/LSU was too late with an offer to get him. LSU got Waters so it's a moot point I think.

We can support Wade without being intellectually dishonest. I, for one, hope there is a way for him to return.

Ditto, but I don't think there is a way. Since he can't (won't) explain himself to his boss LSU shouldn't wait to see how this shakes out. I thought they should've fired him when they suspended him. However, maybe the official end of the season makes the timing right to fire Wade. Otherwise, the program is at a standstill. Recruits will move on to other offers. What about his asst coaches? What has Wade told them? Are they supposed to just wait to see if Wade keeps his job? Too many "ifs" to let this situation linger much longer.

I’ve already seen this brand of basketball with JJ for far too long and I just cannot support it. Uninspired, lazy undisciplined. Its just hard to stomach the regression after having a perfectionist at head coach and being so close to relevancy again. Definitely puts a huge dark cloud over the tournament

So, when LSU loses under the leadership of a black coach the play is “uninspired, lazy, undisciplined.” How do you characterize the losses this year with Wade on the bench?

re: Wade's done...Who's next?

Posted by ToneyBengals on 3/17/19 at 9:06 pm to
I’ve been thinking about this since I don’t think LSU should wait for Will Wade.

Steve Prohm, Iowa St...He’s 44, a Georgia native & ‘Bama grad who has 3 stops in LA on his resume. He started as a volunteer asst to Billy Kennedy at Centenary. He followed Kennedy to SLU & also had a stint at Tulane. He rejoined Kennedy at Murray State & got the HC gig in 2011 after Kennedy left for Texas A&M. Prohm’s success at MSU got him to Iowa State in 2015 where he has won the Big 12 tourney 2x (2017, 2019) & a Sweet 16 finish (2016). They are a #6 seed in the NCAAs (3rd berth in his 4 years). He has had to depend on transfers at ISU. Maybe that’s just been a short term issue, but LSU & LA would provide a stable recruiting base.

Richard Pitino, Minnesota...He’s 36 and coached all over as an asst most notably with Billy Donovan at Florida & under his pops at Louisville. He led a big turn around in 2013 in his only year at Florida International, his 1st HC gig, before Minnesota called. At UM he won a school record 25 games and a NIT ‘ship in 2014. He was Big 10 COY in 2017 w/ a 4th place finish. He has the Gophers back in the NCAAs this year. Can you win consistently at UM? He has one winning conference record in 6 years there (111-91 overall). He could do more at LSU.

Steve Wojciehowski, Marquette...He’s 42 and a former Duke pg & asst when Alleva was AD. Maybe that’s a negative (his handling of Duke LAX/rape case) He’s been 97-67 (43-47 in Big East) at MU in 5 years, his 1st HC job. This will be his 2nd NCAA & MU has a 2-1 NIT record with Wojo. He hasn’t coached in the Deep South though.
Waters
Mays
Sampson
Williams
Reid

Just my hunch. The two 5-star forwards will start with a veteran backcourt. Coach Wade plays 2 point guards historically, so there will be a consistent 20-25 minutes for Smart in rotation with Waters and Mays. Wade says he did a bad job with Sampson after he returned from injury. So, Sampson is Wade’s pet project for next year. He’s gonna coax a consistent season out of Sampson who will be 2nd Team All SEC. The infusion of talent will make Edwards a helluva 5th guard and Rachal also gets spot minutes at his natural wing position. Bigby-Williams is the 3rd rotational big. A vet like Sims & Days will add more depth up front.
Where does Skyler Mays factor into the guard rotation?
We owe it all to Coach Wade. And the SEC Network.

I like what Wade has done with LSU so far, but Missouri with Cuonzo...Damn!

Not Brady, but former Brady assistant Butch Pierre, to help with recruiting LA/Texas.
The error was giving Ben Simmons carte Blanche. The Showtime Crew following him off the court. On the court, not anchoring his arse on the post to play thru him that way instead of him floating around on the perimeter. If he grabbed a defensive rebound and pushed in transition that was fine. But he's not a pg and he didn't shoot well enuf to be a wing.
Butch Pierre anyone? He was on Gottfried's staff at NC State. Would he come back to LSU? Not just LA ties, but also success as a recruiter.

re: If it's Crean or Wade...

How long-term are you thinking? Crean is only 50. He could be at LSU 20 years. Wade is younger, but I think that makes him a riskier hire than Crean.

Wade - 4 years total as HC at UT-Chatanooga/VCU (2 NCAAs)

Crean - 18 years as HC at Marquette/Indiana (10 NCAAs/3 Sweet 16s/1 Final 4)

If Crean is genuinely interested in LSU I would consider it a gift from the Hoop gods. I can't believe IU fired him.

If it's Crean vs Wade, then it's Crean hands down. Make him the 2nd highest paid coach in the SEC. It would be the biggest no doubt hire Alleva has made.

Dan Dakich (former Knight asst) was on ESPN Radio last week and referenced Crean going 0-5. Apparently he was talking about The last 5 Indiana Mr. Basketball, but you can't just criticize Crean. Hell, Only Caleb Swanigan (Purdue) stayed in state. Crean did sign some kid in 2009, Zeller in 2011 and Ferrell (runner up) to Gary Harris in 2012. The guy can recruit. He has pros in the NBA and on that Indiana roster now. He lost his starting guards TY after beating KU and UNC so he can coach. For whatever reason they didn't like him at IU. He recruits, he can coach and re-established IU. Do we doubt that IU is a hell of a lot better off than when he got there? Him vs Will Wade isn't even close.

re: Alleva is a liability

Posted by ToneyBengals on 3/18/17 at 11:22 pm to
Alleva has made some mistakes, but the criticism is over the top. His boss overruled his firing of Les Miles. When Alleva was able to fire Miles he did. This time, his first choice Jimbo wasn't doing the dance. #2 Hermann wanted the Texas job. Alleva only turned to Orgeron - his 3rd choice, because he wouldn't allow Hermann to dis LSU by waiting. There have been facility upgrades all over campus for several sports. Gym, SB, and baseball are elite level programs. But, his job will hinge on the FB/BB hire. Orgeron is unheralded, but I think FB is positioned to return to an elite level. He can only miss on FB once. He's got 2 strikes with BB so this hire is critical too. Our coach must still be working.

re: Kermit Davis could be the Choice

Posted by ToneyBengals on 3/18/17 at 1:09 pm to
Hopefully, Alleva is just waiting to offer Prohm a deal not Davis. I really like how Missouri and NC State identified their guy, offered him and got him. I had hoped Buzz Williams was a possibility but no rumor on him.
Exactly! Get me a coach that's not underrated.
If it's the Cal job I don't think he can take this current assistant with him.
