I am in the minority. Stopped clock on 1st always gave me hope. I hated that the NFL wouldn't. Commercials made the games too long - Not 1st downs.

Not sure the reason for the recommendation unless it came from broadcasters. TV timeouts on every change of possession, field goal, and touchdown add more time to the game than stopping the clock on first downs. Effectively just shortens the actual playtime.
