Dare I say...TOO much football?
quote:

The Big Ten is circulating an internal document that lays out what a 24-team College Football Playoff would look like, including the elimination of conference championship games, a 23+1 selection model and an additional weekend of on-campus CFP home games.

The sides of the potential expansion issue were drawn clear in recent weeks. The SEC was willing to go to a 16-team format, and the Big Ten was willing to grow to 16 only with an agreement to eventually go to 24 teams. Those two leagues essentially control the CFP decision-making, hence the stalemate.

While the document presents nothing formal or official in terms of the future of the College Football Playoff, it does begin to unpack the vision of the 24-team format.

The 24-team format would consist of the 23 best teams and one spot for the Group of 6. There would be no automatic qualifiers, which had been a point of emphasis for the Big Ten in CFP discussions last year. If the field grows to 24, sources have indicated that automatic qualifiers would matter less to the Big Ten.

Should’ve stopped at 4.

Not 4 for 5 conferences.

no, 4 isn't enough. 8 is fine, maybe up to 12, but no more than that

I'ld be okay with 16 (for everybody to play each round), but 12 is good depending on how/why certain teams were chosen.

How long before “made the playoffs” is about as impressive as saying “bowl eligible”?

I never thought I’d miss the BCS, but I would’ve loved to play USC after OU in 2003. Overall, that era was the most exciting cfb has ever been. Seems like cfb is on a self-imposed death march lately though.

every other sport on earth has a playoff to determine its champion, so CFB needed it. But 16 is too many teams.

$$$ is all this would be about. For once, I wish they would prioritize the integrity of the game itself.

anywhere from 8-12 teams is fine. 16 is too many, 24 is absurd

Why even play the regular season? At this rate nobody is gonna schedule any hard games. I’m sick of everything going so corporate.
user avatar
That's 20 teams too many...

It’s already a watered down product. If you go past 12, a lot of 8-3, 8-4 teams will be in and the season will end in Feb. should only be 8 at most

But make sure you don't treat these players like anything other than "student-athletes" smfh sad how college sports is destroying itself. At some point what is the financial benefit these schools will have to give top players to put their NFL futures on the line for a few extra games a year.

We don't need 24 or 16. There aren't even 16 teams who are good enough to win a championship, much less 24. eight seems OK. Fri/Sat games the first weekend. Saturday games the second and the Champ game on the third Saturday.

Why not 36?

Let’s just forget about the regular season and go straight to the playoffs. With that said…more than a 2 team playoff is too many. I actually prefer the mythical national champion. Bowl games matter.

you prefer a mythical national champ based on silly voter polls??? Settle it on the field, like every other sport. Just got to determine what's the right number of teams in the playoff. 8-12 is good, no more than that.

I do believe it would work and I also believe conference matchups must be avoided until they can not be avoided.

Very easy to manipulate the final poll numbers to create conference matchups early.

I've been telling everyone it is going to 24 teams for 5 years now.
