Would you visit anywhere in Central/South America right now as an American?

Seems more dangerous than anywhere overseas including South Africa, Egypt, and Dubai.

How many Americans have been killed in Central/South America recently?

I'll wait.

So you’re writing off an entire continent and adjacent region? Why are you worried about visiting Costa Rica, Brazil, Argentina....cmon, stop generalizing. Yes, some specific spots are not calm or stable at the moment, but for goodness sakes, it’s huge landmass.

Costa Rica, Uruguay, places like that are fine. But you are right that there are a lot of shiteholes. Wouldn't visit mainland Honduras, Guatemala or most of Mexico.

With most of it where people will not visit, not a good sign. Like saying, "hey I want to visit the US but only the eastern seaboard because it is safe"

You miss out because of the frickerty of the rest of the country

Funny you mention it. I went to Peru in 2017 and South Africa in 2018.

So ya, would go.

I'll stick to Europe and other places first before these questionable places.

That's a shame.

I think South Africa has had less than five tourists murdered in the last ten years.

Something pretty low like that. But other crime for sure.

Outside of some African shitholes and maybe a few other random countries, I'd go just about anywhere. Venezuela may be a no for me, and maybe Guyana and French guiana in south america. Maybe skip el Salvador in central America

You do realize that most of Europe has those same government issued security warnings, right? Pretty ignorant to write off the entire continent of South America based on what you are looking at. Plenty of very safe, beautiful countries there.

Spent two weeks in Mexico in the last 3 months (including a week in Juarez), and my father in law just got back from a 3 weeks in Argentina (including on the border of Chile), and neither one of us felt anything close to unsafe. He also has done Brazil numerous times and a couple weeks in Egypt within the last year. He said Egypt only felt unsafe because of the amount of security.

There’s maybe 10-15 places in the world that are truly unsafe, and no one are going there anyway (Syria, North Korea, Iran, Yemen, Uganda, Somalia, Venezuela, and El Salvador to name a few).

You pulled this quote without context. A lot of Cape Town crime statistics incorporate a large geographic area that include large swaths of area no where near the Cape Town "bowl."

It would be like including MS Coast crime with New Orleans stats.

New Orleans doesn't need any help with crime stats, why I've never been.
