Who has been on a Disney cruise?

Looking at one with kids 3 and 5 (by sail date will be 6). My big question is how prevalent are the characters, specifically the mascot variety? The older kid is terrified, like irrationally afraid of mascots. If she ran into real person Cinderella, she's good. If she runs into big dressed up Mickey Mouse, she's in a fit.
If we take her to a sporting event, she's fine if she's up in the bleachers and Mike the Tiger is down on the court or field or whatever. If said mascot is close to her, not OK.
So...are the ships like the parks these days where the characters are all in certain spots and you line up or sign up to meet them? Are they walking around every corner all day long? Am I going to waste my money taking the kid on a trip where she'll constantly be looking over her shoulder, or can I reasonably avoid the mascot types if I just don't sign up for their lines?

Went on two or three with the wife's family. Hardly ever saw the characters. Someone might make a lap around the pool once or twice a day and there could be another greeting people before dinner at the more cartoon forward restaurants/dining rooms. I believe they do have scheduled activities that you can sign up for if you want more character time

I’ve been on a few, and I’m not a Disney fan. The cruises are very clean, good food, entertaining for kids and busy.
The characters do welcome you on to the ship. They also come out after dinner. Kids stand in line to get autographs and take pictures.
My family’s favorite time was 4pm to 7pm. Most people are at dinner. The chairs around the pool free up. You can watch the sunset and a movie. The kids ride the Auquduck non stop since there are no lines.

Several guys I work with have done the cruises to avoid/delay the parks. I think most of them did some premium options (I don't know what they're called or if there are levels), but basically they're on a separate part of the boat and they have their own dining room. They also had their own sections of the beach at ports and such.
Anyway, they all said the cruises were good but I mention the other part because I'm not sure if it makes a considerable difference vs. the standard class trips.

They put out a schedule each night of the next days events (navigator) that shows time and place for character appearances. Outside of that you may run into them randomly as they are moving from one appearance to the next or going from an appearance to their private area of the ship but those didn’t happen very often.

Pre-pandemic, I'd say the likelihood of seeing one at a designated photo place vs a random encounter on the ship was like 80%/20%, but out of that 20%, most of them were not mascot costumes. It was like Peter Pan/Jack Sparrow and Belle/other princesses.
Donald/Mickey/Minnie/etc. do still walk around the ship though, and will stop if someone wants a photo/autograph, so they aren't 100% contained to safe zones. They might just be out where you're walking.
That's pre-COVID though, I don't know what that looks like now.
That may all be different now.

It’s been about 10 years, but I took the Disney Cruise. I don’t care for Disney or cruises. Have to admit I enjoyed it. I do remember the characters being around quite a bit. My wife even committed that you have to wait in line for that at the Disney Park.

FWIW If you take a Disney cruise to the Caymans you can’t bring any BBD back on board.

Best trip ever! We’ve been on two and will def be doing more. The characters are mostly at meet and greets at designated places on the ship. It’d be fairly rare for one to just walk by you except when boarding and maybe when they’re on their way to meet and greet and you happen to pass by them. I’d think you’d be able to see them coming from far away and take a detour though.

Used to work with Disney on some shore excursions. They do have exclusive ShorEx where characters are present, and they have some things unique to Disney.
They have a very good product.

Avid cruiser here. Have not been on Disney. Others I’ve met on other cruises say it’s fantastic, but expensive. You’ll get more bang for your buck on Norwegian, RCCL, or Carnival. If it’s a specifically Disney experience you want, I say go for it. If you’re just wanting to try a cruise, go with the other lines.

Yes. The one place you want to make sure you mention it is when they are in the kids clubs. Make sure the cast members know her fear and they will make sure she isnt caught off guard. The meet and greets on board will have lines and they will be at events on board so they are easy to avoid if you want to.
That being said, intentionally missing so many of the characters in shows and on board eliminates one one of the biggest lures of the line itself so you'll hve to weigh if the extra costs are worth it when you're removing one of the big things that help justify the cost (especially if you're looking at one of their itineraries out of south florida, NOLA or galveston)
