Looking for a place to take the wife and 3 boys (ages 3-9) for a week in early August. We want to go somewhere that will be reasonably enjoyable for the adults (i.e. not Disney) but also where the kids will be moderately entertained...at least from time to time.

We do not want to go sit on a beach for a week.

We live in Houston, so it'd be great if it were somewhere we could drive to, but flying is an option also. I have tons of Delta miles, so some high-graded places we could fly to for really cheap are Atlanta, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, SLC, Detroit, Boston, and Seattle. That said, anywhere we can fly to out of Houston (preferably direct) would be fine.

What ideas come to mind?

I like the west coast that time of year to escape the heat

Can't beat San Diego, but you could also do the PNW like Seattle or similar

Kids are young, so that limits where you can go. If they were teenagers, I'd say Glacier National Park in Montana.

RMNP. Easy and cheap flight to Denver from Houston.

San Diego would also be nice. The Zoo, Balboa Park, take the kids to see the seals at La Jolla Cove.

You live in a big city. Don't go to a big city.

Go take those kiddos to the outskirts of Salt Lake for some hiking and outdoor stuff. Utah has a lot to offer.

Fly into Atlanta, rent a car and head to Tennessee. I know a lot of people frown upon Pigeon Forge/ Gatlinburg area but we had a lot of fun. Rent a cabin in the mountains with a view and then there are tons of things to do with kids that age in the area. There is an aquarium in Gatlinburg, also a suspension bridge that you ride a ski lift up to, beautiful views, there's also a sky tower like what they have in Hot Springs. Pigeon Forge has Dolly Parton's Stampeded dinner show, they also have a Pirate one I'm sure your kids would like. Dollywood is the nicest, cleanest amusement park I've ever been to and the food there is phenomenal. Rent an ATV and drive to Cades Cove in the Smokey Mountain National Park and look for bears, we saw 5 and they were very close to the road, so we got a good view, we also saw lots of deer. You can go white water rafting, the lower Pigeon Forger River trip is made for kids 3+, it's about 1.5 hours long and your boys would love it. Pigeon Forge is full of kid friendly things to do. We had a blast and wouldn't mind going back but do know that it is a touristy area.

Blow miles on business class international travel, not for $149-189 (IAH to SLC as an example) tickets on an A220. Pigeon Forge should be fun, you can mix outdoorsy with a promise of a day in Dollywood.

ATL, MSP, LA, Detroit, high graded? In what, exactly?

Fly into Denver then head West into the mountains for cooler weather.

This, but just fly into Chattanooga instead. There's plenty to do in the Chattanooga area.

That’s where my parents took me and my two brothers when we were young. But we drove from NOLA

We head north in late summer usually Colorado or Wyoming. You can find some nice cool weather and spend time outdoors.

With 3 boys this might be a good option.

We are doing RMNP with three boys 10, 7, and 5 in a few weeks.

Did it last year with kids aged 2, 4, and 6. Had a good time. Cabins might be available at the YMCA, which has plenty of kid activities

Agree with the posters who said San Diego. Went last September with my wife and 2 year old and there is a ton to do and weather is awesome.
