I have a conference in SD (Gaslamp area) and the hotel rooms are astronomical. Saved about $600 over the course of the stay by doing an AB&B

Check out the Mira Mesa area. It isn't too far from La Jolla and there are some reasonably priced AirBnB's out there. Lots of good Asian restaurants there too.
Actually now that I look at it, Mira Mesa is kinda far. Bird Rock is a very nice neighborhood though.

Was there last June. Look up La Jolla Shores
Stayed in a 3/3 airbnb 2 blocks off the beach. Walking distance to 5-6 really good restaurants, pizza joint, and a couple bars

We stayed at La Valencia and enjoyed it. Good location, nice old world feel.

The La Jolla Shores Hotel is old school, but pretty neat. It was a favorite of mine when I had a work assignment in the area. I also often stayed at the Empress (GREAT Italian restaurant inside). Upside is better walkability than the shores, downside is lack of pool. I never really splurged in La Jolla proper since I always either lived there or was traveling for work. I have stayed at the Lodge at Torrey Pines, but it’s not walking distance to other attractions (though it is lovely).

This is all going to depend on what you want to spend. If you can't tell us that, it's really hard to help you.

This is the correct answer. Can take 15-20 minute Uber ride to La Jolla Cove/Prospect Street. Can also head the same distance in the opposite direction and visit Del Mar

I have done airbnb twice in La Jolla. Both houses were extremely nice and walkable to the downtown area.

Check out La Valencia - might want to get adjoining rooms as most are small. Kids will love pool, being right in the middle of the shops/restaurants and ocean right outside window. Very cool hotel.

We stayed at Pantai Inn. It's right on the shore with beautiful views. I recommend it.

Be sure to ask about amenities and don't assume. My vrbo did not have AC.
My wife was 6 months pregnant in August with no AC. All the owner could offer were fans. That didn't go very well.
It was pleasant at night with all the windows open. Couldn't stay there during the day. Temp was great outside, but the heat was too much inside.
La Jolla is an amazing area.

thanks for the replies. We'll be there in mid April, alot of the vrbo rentals do not have AC so that was a concern.
we made reservations at a hotel a few blocks from the beach(HIlton), it was a great price relatively speaking. It's a 48 hour cancellation notice so we'll keep looking at the places recommended here.
as far as price range, prefer not to go over $400 a night.
thanks again guys

I agree with La Valencia. I have never stayed there but we met some friends there while on a trip to San Diego and had drinks on the outdoor terrace overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It is a beautiful place.

Moderately expensive but the effect of the sunset view from there causes what could best be characterized as “a Pantai drop”.
I love La Jolla.
That I don’t have a house there lets everyone know that I’m not wealthy.
