4 of us. We have a car. Staying in the Emmental valley within reach of Bern. We've already done Bern, interlaken/ Brienz, Mt. Pilatus/Luzerne, wandered over to the French side to LA Gruyere for a tour of Callier (great) and the cheese factory (meh) ??.

Been a long vacation and we don't feel like making the long drive to Zermatt. Should have done that earlier. ??

Maybe go to some non tourist areas and experience how people really live.

Zappa, that's been the best part of it. Staying in an old farmhouse in a tiny village, walking down the hill and watching the hornussen teams practice (sport of Swiss farmers) and visiting with my Swiss friends in their home.

Yall are not that far from the Lake District in Italy. Lake Maggiore, Lake Como, Lake Garda. Even Milan and Verona are close enough to visit.

I don’t know how far out of your way Zermatt is but that area is absolutely gorgeous.

Someone mentioned the Italian Lake Region. That is another beautiful place if it is not too far out of your way. We stayed in Lugano Switzerland when visiting that region.

Bern is a commercial city and was one of my least favorite stops in Switzerland.

Zappa comin in hot! Fully agreed, people live in smaller towns, that's where the character is. Like going to a Tesco Express in London, that's not England/Wales/Scotland.

Check the weather, that may dictate what you're able to do. I don't know if southern Europe gets rained in like northern Europe and UKI before June, but your options may be limited, especially with significant others involved.

Stop thinking about the car (I know you're already asleep, so that's burned a day), but Marseille, Milan, Turin, Basel, Grenoble can all be in play. Everyone in Lichtenstein sounds rich AF, maybe there?

If you're into history, go find a WWI/WWII battlefield or memorial. It'll nearly certainly be in a small town, and you can just ... be in Europe. Anywhere with a war memorial seems much more accepting and accommodating of English speakers, too.

Like going to Paris, if you don't soak in cafe culture because you're missing part of the point.

Best of luck.

Yep, back in Bucharest. Ahhh the pleasures of post Soviet-bloc life??

We so thoroughly wore ourselves out we stayed in the Emmental Valley, only venturing out for a walk up the hill, watching the local Hornussen teams practice (that was cool, looks dangerous)

Highlights? Everything. After we left our friends place near Neuchatel we were passing through a small village and saw a brass band on the street corner playing to 25-30 folks. We pulled over and joined them. What a hoot! A mixture of young and old playing arrangements of traditional Swiss tunes, old black gospel songs. Final tune was Funky Town.????. They eyed us curiously at first, but before we left we shared in their food and drink and had exchanged contact info.
