Uber vs "taxi service" in Italy

Travel agents still exist? And people still use them?

No Uber. There’s an app you can get to book taxis in the cities that works well.

There is Uber, it’s just not regular Uber, all of them are Uber Limos (Mercedes, Audis etc) driven by licensed limo drivers, so it costs more

Use the “my taxi” app. It is just like Uber, but for taxis. You type in your destination, and can pay with cash-or through the app. It works in most all major European cities.

I’d do car service to and from the airport and then use a combination of my taxi and your legs the rest of the time.

Pretty sure that’s what we used in Florence and it worked perfectly. Haven’t been to Rome in forever so not sure the best for that.

This. There is Uber, but taxis are more prevalent, and cheaper. Train in from the airport. Also, always have cash for normal taxis. Some will say they don't accept cards, which is BS, but not work fricking with. Apps help with price management.

If you are staying in the city centers, which in the larger cities are where just about anything you want to see is, they are pretty walkable, even in our mid 50’s. Just wear comfy shoes (watch out for the cobblestone streets in Rome). It was a great way to really see the city and we found some “hidden gem” shops and restaurants (also lost a few pounds even eating pasta, pizza, and gelato!).

Also, if you are going to Rome or Florence you get free bus rides when you buy the City Pass packages that help you save money and time in line buying tickets.
