Traveling to Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai (pic updates)

am traveling to China in about a week. We are traveling to 3 days in Beijing, 3 days in Xi'an and 2 days in Shanghai. It is a group tour with a scheduled itinerary but wanted to check and see if the Travel Board had any suggestions to do, try or look out for while over in China.

Sorry 3 days in Beijing, 1.5 days in Xi'an and three days in Shanghai. Just trying to see if there are any tips from anyone who has traveled in China especially with phones, credit cards, etc.
It is a group tour so the itinerary is already made out. Not a ton of wiggle room on cities and times.

Credit cards fine in bigger places, like hotels etc. I have needed cash for many restaurants, convenience stores & especially taxis.
Download a VPN app for your phone (I prefer Windscribe).

Okay looking at the thread now after work and realized how glad I am to have gone there despite not wanting to go back again
. I think I was there for 5 days and that was plenty, 3 days will be good enough to go see the great wall, see Tienanmen Square/Forbidden City, and some of the other cool things. Peking duck is a requirement I'd say

I’m thinking this is a once in a lifetime trip for me. Looking forward to seeing things I’ve only read about. Your pictures were exactly what I’m hoping to see. I think Peking duck is defiantly going to happen. Anything you recall I should try or buy while over there?

Will you always be with a group? Or any time "away"? My advice depends on the answer to that.

Almost all of the time will be with the group. I think they will turn us loose in an area for a few hours to explore some. Last day in Shanghai I think we have a little more time to explore.

In Xi’an ride bikes on the wall around the old city and see tomb of Terra-cotta Soldiers.

Beijing have some suits and dress shirts made. We went to The Great Wall about a 2 hour bus ride from Beijing. Drink a beer on top of the Wall and ride the toboggan down to the bottom.
Shanghai is where you can obtain western food fairly easily. Shop, sightsee and stroll along the riverfront. Asked price is merely a starting point. Have fun with all of the knockoffs.
If you happen to see a knockoff Rolex that is marked as Holex, Polex or Nolex, hit me back on TigerDroppings. I looked all over Shanghai for one when I was there in 2006.

Bring peanut better and granola bars just Incase the food overwhelms you.
Surprisingly my phone worked just fine without a VPN. I was able to use social media and browse the internet with no problem.
We had a guy in the hotel in Beijing that would custom make suits, shirts, blazers, slacks, and dresses. He turned them around in 2 days and they were ULTRA cheap.
I’d get out and try to do somethings away from your group our favorite times were when we were just walking around to find a cool restaurant. The parks at night were bustling with people and activities which was really neat to see.
In Shanghai it was really cool to go on the Bund first thing in the morning. You get to see locals doing tai chi among other things. Also- be sure to go at night but be prepared for the largest gathering of people you’ve ever seen in your life.
When you are on the Great Wall they have guys that will engrave your name onto a metal or metal card that says you climbed the Great Wall. That ended up being one of our favorite souvenirs and we hung it up with a nice picture of us on the wall. They say over there “you can’t be a hero until you climb the Great Wall”
As an American you will likely fascinate all of the school kids that you see there. They will all want to take your picture or take a picture with you.
You are in for a great trip. Just make sure that you venture a little bit on your own.

Google, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram and many others are all blocked in China. You weren't accessing those without a VPN client.

I know 100% for a fact this isn't true.
I just got back from GZ and instagram def worked and I have a friend who lives on there and regularly posts on IG.
For the OP, I haven't been to those three, but the most difficult thing for me in China is very few people speak or understand English. Completely different than Hong Kong or other Asian countries.

Some sites may have changed (possibly IG) recently, but I know for 100% fact that most of those and many others are blocked.
