How does "Cheapest" mean "Top"?

I'm not saying those are bad places to visit, but your title does not match the article at all.

Just got back from Slovenia, Croatia (only Zagreb), Hungary, and Slovakia yesterday, as well as Austria.

Slovenia is incredible, and so is Budapest.

I wouldn’t say they are that cheap though.

How’s the language barrier in Eastern Europe?

It really depends on when and where you go. London is always expensive like New York City. Rome is never cheap. But there's tons of places you can go just like the states when its off peak time that can be cheap.

My recent $400 30min r/t flight from Athens to Santorini disagrees with the list. Cheap and Oia don’t exactly go together either.

Hope you'll be doing a trip report!

In the last 2 years, I've been fortunate to have been able to travel to Slovenia, Croatia (twice), Hungary (Budapest, twice), Bulgaria (Veliko Tarnavo), Serbia (Belgrade) and Romania. Some of these places aren't without their struggles, but it was an amazingly enriching experience. I did a couple of trip reports on these stops.

"Cheap" is a relative term, but I will say Romania, Serbia and Bulgaria were particularly "cheap" (beers for 1-3 euros. Meals for 5-10 euros. As examples). Compared to places like Germany or France, or the Scandinavian countries, certainly much cheaper.

All the younger people speak English in the countries I've been to (Croatia, Hungary, Slovenia, Romania, Serbia and Bulgaria). In fact, I found more people spoke English in these countries than on our trip to Northeast Italy. German, Italian and Russian are spoken extensively as well, but English is fairly common.

Google Translate can be your friend and I found if you learn a few "go to phrases" (ask a local on "how do you say.." so you learn to say it right), you're going to do well.

Really? Budapest was stupid cheap in my eyes. I'll be doing Slovenia next year (with an extra stop in Budapest again, most likely), so I'll see how it is there.

Cheap is relative to what you are willing to spend...

I didn't see Austria on this list. Hard for me to believe all of those are cheaper than Austria.

Read an article but secondary cities that are often overlooked and many of them look very nice without the issue of overcrowding from tourist

I really like that list. The east is under travelled and wonderfully different. To my eyes at least.

I’m in Monte Carlo. Watched a guy run up a 50k bar tab at a pool party yesterday. Place is insanely not on your list. Is there a list of best places for Russian oligarchs to blow 500k on a weekend?

True on both accounts. Found the costs to be very cheap, particularly in places like Bulgaria, Serbia and Romania. We got a stash of Romanian Leus to start our trip this April from Bank of America, so maybe that's a good tip if you land in one of the non-EU countries to start with some of the local currency. ATMs and banks to exchange money were very prevalent in the ones we've been to though. Goal is to not get stuck with too much of that currency if you're not going to be there very long.
