We did make it to Chatham Bars Inn, hung out on the beach there for a bit yesterday. Jogged a few miles in the morning and got to see a lot of the coast, and road bikes after to see a little further north. . Food at Del Mar in Chatham was probably the highlight, with Goose as a close second. Between Thursday and Friday we hopped in Red Nun, Bistro on Main, and Chatham Squire for bites and booze. Last night was the Chatham Squire bartenders final night working there after 12 years so we were overserved but had a great time being entertained by the locals celebrating his departure. Will follow up with restaurant details when I have more time. On the road to Boston now.
We are time limited on Boston. Hotel is Intercontinental by the Wharf. My thought is that we would keep it limited to North End and South Boston and come back another time to see the northwest part.
We plan to move around Greenway north from the hotel and hop on freedom trail for a bit (hit bell in hand) then move into north end for a bit. After that dinner at B and G then move to south boston and try a few spots on Abita's list near Congress. May end up hitting the spots near B and G on Abit's list instead of heading to Congress area.
I have a few questions:
1. Should we end the night in north end or south Boston? Whats best for hopping around on foot at night?
2. Are there are any quintessential Boston spots to get a black and tan on that route?
3. Any hole in the wall neighborhood bars around those areas where we can people watch and listen to locals?

The North End, no doubt.

Can’t say I’ve ever ordered a Black and Tan before so can’t help you there.

None open right now due to Covid. Bars that don’t serve food aren’t able to be open, and the best hole in the wall places don’t serve food usually.

Thanks, I will switch it up so we end the night in North End.
I have never had a black and tan either, just thought that is what you do in Boston.
Thanks for all the help. Is it worth trying to get out to South Boston (B and G) or should we just spend the afternoon/ evening between Greenway area and north end?

I have to be honest with you, I have never heard of this in my life. And I’ve lived here seven years.
So B&G is in the a South End, not South Boston (aka Southie). I know that’s confusing, but they’re actually two different places, albeit next door to each other.
If I were you I’d spend my time exploring the North End, Beacon Hill, and Back Bay. Including the Boston Common. All walkable.

Haha, I was asked where I was getting black and tans twice before I left. Got you, I was thinking South End just because a lot of your recommendations in that area are in close proximity to each other and thought we could try a few. I will look at Back Bay area.

Don’t get me wrong, the south end is an incredible neighborhood. As is southie.
But if you’re short on time, hit the highlights. Which would be the neighborhoods I outlined above.

You have any updated spots to try in Back Bay Beacon Hill area. If there is a good area with a few spots to try that would be great. Having a quick beer on the freedom trail now.

Lots of great spots, but I’ll recommend Saltie Girl 100% of the time when asked for a place to eat in Back Bay.

Done. Will let you know how we do. Quick stop at Neptune Oyster now.

Both seafood menus, but both unique. Hope you enjoy!

Sounds like you packed alot fun in a couple of days.Ive never been to Del Mar or Red Nun.Ill check both out in August. I'm sure the wife liked those shops along Main. Was the light house open for tours? Some great views
Did you take 6A on your way back? You probably didn't if you were in a hurry to get back to Boston.

Just wanted to stop in and say how much I appreciate this thread. Moved up here in January and will be coming back to this thread often when more things open back up

Abita (or anyone), y’all have any whale watching recommendations/tips? The family is coming to visit in a month and mentioned wanting to do that. I know the aquarium has one out of the harbor.
I also thought about taking one out of Gloucester and spending part of the day around there and Rockport so that they can see a bit of the coast.

There is a great whale watching tour out of Gloucester if you want to make the trek there. You can take the commuter rail and the Gloucester station will drop you off right in their little downtown, so you can walk everywhere from there.
However, if you don't want to go through the commuter rail, there is a whale watching tour that leaves out of the dock right next to the aquarium on Atlantic Ave. in Boston. If you want you can even get a pass that gives you access to the aquarium and then onto the boat.
Honestly, once you're on the boat it's all the same tours - the boats are all tracking the same whales. Gloucester is a nice little New England town though and on a nice day it's fun to sit out at Cape Ann Brewing and get some lunch on the water.

Abita,
We’ve got a group going to Boston for the Saints game in September. Hitting up Fenway Friday night for the Red Sox-Yankees game too. Where would be the best place for us to stay? I’ve heard the area around Fenway is legit with bars and stuff. Any info would be great. TIA

Red Sox Yankees hotels book up fast around Fenway area
Check around long wood area or Coolidge corner and it’s a quick t ride or about 5 blocks to walk it or you can Uber

I'm making the same trip and we're staying at the Charlesmark hotel in the backbay/Copley Square area. We walked to fenway from that area two years ago doing a park tour and it wasn't bad at all. It's a really cool area . Just my two cents.

Awesome. Thanks for the info.

Fenway is alright, but there are other areas of the city that I'd rather stay in while still being a short T ride or walk to Fenway.
I'd look into any areas that are along the Green Line of the T (so Back Bay, Boston Common, etc.) That will make it easier for you to get to/from Foxboro (which is a bitch) but still keep you close to Fenway.
