Any tips on savings? I've seen some cool stuff here where y'all combine flights or book certain times of the year etc.

I have flown MSY to SJO 6 times since June. Here is my advice. Fly early - United- the 7 am departure - arrival around 1 pm in Costa. Remember CR has an abysmal customs and standard time to get through is running around 2 hours right now. Economy airfare is typically around $400 round trip. Arrange your transfer in advance.

Pimp!
We have a group going and I forgot to book flights. I think they are all doing that 7am one.

You definitely want the early flight. It took me 3 hours to get through customs in early December. And traffic in San Jose at rush hour can kill your buzz. So the earlier you arrive the better. I definitely recommend United- of 12 total flights in the last 6 months back and forth, only one was late. That route is pretty reliable.

That’s good info, thanks.
I’m a dummy and didn’t book last Oct when I could have and now tickets are almost double.

My advice - get there any way you can and never come back.
That place is heaven on earth. I’m seriously looking at retiring there.

I flew from Nola to San Jose in August with a layover in Houston. It was pretty cheap... about $350 I believe. I booked a few months before.

For the record, I RA'd for thread move over a day ago. Sorry MT folk, I've done all I can.

Looks like it made the move over.
Google Flights is my go-to if you're doing cash bookings. If you're booking with points it would depend on what you have available (airline specific, card specific, etc)

THIS. I spent 2:45 in that ridiculous line in late December. Arrived early afternoon on Delta from ATL. Back in May the same flight took less than 10 minutes to clear. India still wins for worst arrival experience, but Costa Rica is gaining ground.

Will check google - thanks. No points.

Or rent a car. Very easy to get around there if you want to travel to multiple areas.

I always book through the airline since Expedia screwed me over a few years back.
Last time I flew Copa out of New Orleans (2019) It lands in Panama and connects to San Jose in about 45 minutes. It was about $50 a ticket more but customs in NOLA is 100% better than Miami, Atlanta, Dallas or Houston.

Cannot second this enough. We flew down on United, back on Copa. Customs in New Orleans was the easiest thing ever. TSA checkin is 10X worse. Plus the Panama City Airport was a pretty cool experience in itself.

You can track prices and can see if flexibility in dates changes your price on Google Flights. They don't list SW prices, have to do that at southwest.com and they do travel to LIR & SJO. There's no "best day" or time to book, that's an old wive's tale, but usually earlier the better.
