Both Murren and Wengen are 20ish min. train rides up from the Lauterbrunnen valley floor and have plenty of hotels/airbnbs. You can cover a lot of ground with how efficient the rail is and you can’t really go wrong staying anywhere in that region.
We had a day we left open in the middle of our trip(mid-Aug.) and had zero issues finding a spot in Wengen the night before. Wengen is a good bit bigger and more of a ski town vibe than Murren.
If we did it again we’d likely stay in Murren. Spending a day or two hiking between dairy farms that serve meat, cheese, and beer isn’t a terrible way to roll.

You can’t drive to Wengen or Murren right?

Check out Jonathan @ Edelweiss tours. He does small group tours. Best way to go. There were 9 of us and it was great. He takes care of all the logistics. Check out his website . We went to Switzerland in 2021 with him and did his Italy tour in 2022. Going to Ireland with him in 2024

Correct, you cannot drive up to Murren or Wengen. You can likely leave a car in Lauterbrunnen similar to leaving it in Tasch to go up to Zermatt. It’s roughly the same distance.

Basil is a beautiful city. We enjoyed our day there. I would suggest looking at Viking cruises. It is a great way to see a lot of Europe without having to pack and unpack. They take care of everything for you also

We stayed in Murren on our visit and I cannot recommend it enough. It's got a small town feel with a single pedestrian-only main drag that runs from the train station to the Schilthorn lift station.
The trip up to the Schilthorn has excellent views of the Eiger/Monch/Jungfrau and the lift ticket is cheaper/faster than getting up to the albeit higher Jungfraujoch on the other side.

We were there in late June/early July and these hikes were the best part. Hiked above Murren a few hours and then down to Gimmelwald before taking the lift back to Murren are a nice way to spend the day.
For accomodations, we got a corner balcony room at Hotel Alpina and the views across/above the Lauterbrunnen valley were spectacular.
Would love to back someday...

Anybody try the gondola ride to the top of Pilatus near Lucerne?
Thoughts?

I was in Zurich for a quick 48 hours. Worth taking the train to Lucerne. Not sure if you have caught the watch but (I have it now, but didn’t so much at the time 5 years ago) — lots of cool watch stores as well if interested.

Murren & Lauterbraunan were amazing.
Driving wasn’t bad. We drove from Austria without understanding any signage and figured it out.
I did get a photo ticket in the mail from Lucerne Polezei a few months later though…
I got lost going up a small mountain road so don’t get too brave unless you’re prepared.
There was the freakiest tunnel I’ve ever seen though; once I FINALLY got out, I turned around & went back down. Miles of 1 Lane tunnel circling upward with carved rock a few feet on each side and top of car. No lights whatsoever.
SCARY as shite, but cool as hell.

Not to hijack but has anyone gone around March and skied around the lauterbrunnen area? Just curious of the crowds and quality of snow at that time.

My son and I enjoyed it. My favorite is flying into Geneva and then taking the train to Lausanne. The restaurants are great. They have dinner cruises on Lake Geneva which are also fun. Very French feel.

Was there for 2 days last month. Didn't ski, but the crowds didn't look big at all and the snow looked pretty good as we kept taking the train up.
It was really just narrow snow trails as you got closer to the bottom at Grindelwald.

Just booked an apartment in Lauterbrunnen for this time next year for a week. Decided to make Lauterbrunnen a week long base with nights bookended wherever we end up getting flights out of.

Check out Lugano Switzerland!

Beautiful lake. In the "Italian Part" of Switzerland.
Everything you like about Italy with Swiss efficiency and cleanliness.

Go to Wengen. Stunningly beautiful. I didn’t want to leave—like ever.

Good Choice. Not a Switzerland expert, but can tell you what I think you don't want to miss. You would have plenty of time with two days in north Italy with a 8 day trip.
Also check flights into Milan, Italy ... sometimes specials to there. (If you can't fly into Milan cheap, you could fly into Venice and stay a couple of nights there, then a short train ride to Milan). You can catch a regular train from Milan to the starting point of the Gotthard Panoramic Express (Lugano). Try to book a room near the train station. Give your self plenty of time to get to that first leg of the scenic train ride. Once you get to Lake Lucerne, it switches to a boat ride across Lake Lucerne to Lucerne. You can do this trip in reverse of my post. ... you can thank me later, or a Christmas present/card would be fine too. You are welcome.

Lauterbraunan is amazing.
Hotel Silberhorn
Great place to stay, was reasonable and convenient.
Easy to get around Switzerland by car, although I did get a speeding ticket in the mail a few months later.
Definitely take the train up to Murren…

For those of you that have done Switzerland… did you purchase a travel pass for unlimited boat and train rides. I see it offers 50% off on cable cars too if you have it. Seems like something worth looking into.

Yes. I don't know if we ended saving money per se but it did push us to do some great things we probably wouldn't have done otherwise.
