Other than avoiding getting shot, what are some must do sights, events in Chicago in Dec for a group of adults and teen children?

Also, where should we stay??

Stay near the river walk and navy Pier. That will keep you close to most of the tourist stuff and it's a safe part of the city. There are a handful of good hotels in the area.

Last time we stayed at the Hyatt Regency which is nice. Had a unobstructed view of navy Pier and we were a block from the river.

Stay anywhere in the loop or just north. Great choices for hotels.

Art Institute
Field Museum
John Hancock Tower
There will be some Broadway type show in residency; several good regional theaters (Steppenwolf, The Goodman)
Great shopping all over
Chicago deep dish pizza for dinner one night

You won’t need to rent a car. Just take the L from either airport.

Dumb comment. Gun violence is nowhere near where you would be staying or visiting.

With a family, I'd recommend staying in River North, Streeterville, or one of the hotels lining Wacker in The Loop.

Stay safe.

Make sure the women bring some form of winter boot that can get wet. It can be very cold and wet in December, but it’s a great city around the Holidays.

River North is my favorite place to stay. Don’t be afraid to Uber around a lot if it’s cold but the El gets you within walking distance of most places.

Also looking into the tourist museum and events packages. You can buy a group of 4-5 tickets and save good money.

I'd recommend staying pretty much anywhere between downtown and wrigley field. Prob closer to downtown, but each spot has its pros and cons.

Def go to the art institute, it's worth it. Field museum is cool, they have a really large t-rex, but i'd say its more geared toward children than other stuff you can do.

Do a Wrigley Field tour, pretty interesting and good way to spend a couple hours. Then you can walk around wrigleyville for a bit.

Lots of cool buildings downtown, i'd say do they river tour 100%, but it is not offered in the winter. Maybe just walk around and go check out the big ones, Trump tower, etc, there should be some good decorations for christmas. Maybe do some ice skating. It wil be very cold.

Could go to a sporting event.

Lots of stuff to eat. Portillo's would be a good stop for a large casual crowd. Any of the deep dish spots are good. Lots of steakhouses, maybe get a big table one night there. Harry Carey's is a good spot for a large group.

Thanks for that advice and the others that posted earlier. I’m slowly piecing something together...

Lots of good info here. I wished that we had spent a full day at the art museum instead of half a day. I'll add a trip to the Museum of Science and Industry to the trip list especially if you have kids.

Yep, although I couldn't imagine doing that in December.

Field Museum, Museum of Science and Industry (U 505), Fine Arts Museum. Chicago Tower (sky ledge), River architecture tour IF you can find an indoor seat boat. Train from airport to downtown is about $10 each and easy and fast. I stayed overlooking the Michigan Ave bridge on the river. Great location.

Also, go eat at the SNL Cheeborger, Cheeborger place right off the Mich Ave bridge. Hint, it is down below the street level. Hard to find but good and very fun.

Art Institute is amazing

Some paintings in there that you’ve probably seen in any art class you’ve ever taken and there they are.

Get hot dogs at Portillo’s.

Get the deep dish.

It’s a really cool city for any other interests you might have. I went In the summer so I caught A Cubs game.

$5 from O’Hare and $2.50 from Midway. Much cheaper than Uber/Lyft and, depending on time of day, could be quicker than hopping in a taxi or rideshare.

Wife and I were there for a week in the summer and never got in a car the entire time. We took the train or bus everywhere we went. Never a hassle and never felt uncomfortable.
