If you're lucky, you'll catch the Spring bloom. It's really pretty amazing to see the desert so full of flowers. Dont get me wrong, it's not like fields of tulips, but its pretty colorful and unexpected. Kinda depends on how wet the Winter was there.

You will love it. I went two years ago to explore and take photos. The bluebonnets are huge there. See if the rangers are doing any night time star looking. They had a whole area setup when I was there and was pretty amazing. See if you can stay here

I just camped but will stay here next time. Have fun!

El Paso Mexican food is more New Mexican than Old Mexico, IMHO.

Pretty safe place as well.

That part is surprisingly true. EP is pretty safe (since Pancho Villa died)

Also, what would be a good hotel to stay at? I'll be getting in late Friday and leaving early Sunday.

The Chisos Basin Lodge or the Gage Hotel in Marathon would be my recommendation.

Sao - that’s a trek from the younger years. Could not even think about it today.

All that enjoy the national parks, get on the trail while you till can. Really frustrating to stand a trailhead you once conquered with ease knowing it is nothing but a memory today.

Guadalupe Mountains

What would you say is the level of difficulty to get to the peak?

River road from the park to Presidio. You'd make a loop from Alpine to BB on 118 and then back to marfa/alpine via 67.

Depending on what you're driving, The Christmas mountains 4x4 trail. Probably the best view of the BB mountains.

I hiked Guadalupe Peak. It's no more than 5 or 6 miles each way. I think it was about 5,000' of elevation gain. If you're in reasonable shape, it's an easy day hike. Just make sure you have plenty of water.

Once there, buy the book “Death in Big Bend”, written by an ex park ranger. It’s sounds morbid but it’s really intriguing. Also, don’t do anything those people did. It’s something your passenger can read while you drive through the park. Big Bend is awesome btw.

You should have booked a room at Chisos basis lodge already if you’re looking for a hotel. Hotels in marathon are sparse, and it’s a hell of a drive to get to the trailheads in the park from there let alone just drive around from one side to the other. Would recommend looking online at the national park website ASAP and consider looking for a campsite if you are amenable to that. There may be some availability from late cancellations. National park lodging is not easy to get, even in BFE Texas.

As far as things to do, would recommend lost mine trail at daybreak, the window trail, and boquillas canyon side (east) as there is the hot springs and other attractions on that side. Santa Elena and or Guadalupe peak trail would be only time permitting as the drive can drain a lot of the day and Guadalupe peak will take you all day depending on your fitness level. The rim trail is a big commitment as well but well worth the time if you want to sign off a whole day to that.

Yeah it was kind of a last minute idea.

I am going to have to get a room in Fort Stockton, which is about two hours north and east, but it will cut down on the trek back.

Fort stockton is not terrible if you're not going back and forth everyday. We stayed there on the way home when our kids were very young to get a jump start on the drive home.

Also check in Marathon - there are a couple of places there that are only about an hour out.

Did I read your itinerary right that you will only be spending 1 day in the park?

Yes that’s correct.

I believe I can get good shots of the River, desert and mountains within 10 hours.

one day:
-drive to panther junction then to chisos lodge, go to visitors center, hike the chisos loop (1.8mi) and the window view (0.3mi).
-drive the ross maxwell scenic drive from chisos to castalon and santa elena, hike santa elana.
-drive the old maverick road nack to maverick junction
-drive to terlingua and see the ghost town, eat & drink there

thats about all you can do in a day

Thanks for creating my itinerary.
