Headed to Athens over Thanksgiving. First time there....any suggestions on cool pub to enjoy cocktails and a couple really good restuarants?

I was there this past April.

I don’t have any names for you but you did pick the right neighborhood to be in.

If you walk up and down the main street you will see plenty of atmospheric restaurants and taverns cooking local specialties with outdoor seating for people watching.

There’s a restaurant called Kosmikon. It is on a busy confluence of streets. We sat outside under the trees and had a great meal and great people watching.

Not sure how familiar you are with Greek restaurants but a lot of them use Facebook as their “website” their page has lots of info. We stopped by one afternoon and reserved a table for later that night.

Another one is Old Tavern of Psarras. It is a famous place where several restaurants are up a steep staircase. It’s a cool spot, maybe a little more touristy. Even if you don’t eat there, go by the at area at night so see the steps and people sitting out drinking and talking.

We stayed in Plaka and just asked our host for a good taverna that locals went to and not tourist. I'd recommend asking around. Or, just go a few blocks away from the tourist. There's a few rooftop bars in Athens with views of the Acropolis. But, depending where you are in Plaka, you might not have a good view.

Greece has zero shortage of great tavernas. You can normally determine the difference between a tourist spot and local spot by the cost of the Greek salad. If it's the cost of an entree, it's a tourist trap.

Bretto's

The following are not in Plaka but all are easily walkable.

The Clumsies-

Go eat at Kilmataria - call them and make a reservation - ask them when the band will be playing. Kilmataria

Also, think about Avli

Try Athenee for cocktails and they have an interesting menu also.

Dionysios Zonar's

For bars I liked the Clumsies and Baba Au Rum both are a short walk from Plaka, and the Drunky Goat I'm not sure if it is considered technically Plaka but close enough that it makes no difference.
