Porto, Portugal

Doing a conference in Porto first week in July 2024. Be there 5 days for conference but planning on longer total stay of 2 weeks. Probably flying into Lisbon.
Any suggestions for what to do in Portugal? Seems like Lisbon and wine country are on way to Porto.
Is it too much to sneak in a trip to Spain as well? Thanks.

2 weeks is a long time. I would plan on 3-4 days in the Algarve. 3-4 days in Lisbon. A couple of extra days in Porto on non conference time. An overnight in Douro Valley.
Adjust if you want to go to Spain which is absolutely doable.
You will be in peak Euro vacation season so good luck!

I recommend 2 to 3 full days in the Douro. Absolutely amazing place, especially if you want some rest and relaxation.
Not sure on your financials, but stay at one of the Quintas. I’d recommend Quinta do Vallado or Quinta da Gricha, but there are several others.
The wife and I also took a private tour with LAB Tours. They curate it for you and lunch is included.
The Douro Valley is genuinely one of my favorite places in the world, let me know if you want more details on my trip.

1st-class train service between Lisbon and Porto is excellent. You order from a menu and are served on china. You can do most of the things you want to do in Lisbon in 5 days. If you want a special time and can find a good ticket price fly to the Azores...Sao Miguel the biggest island.

If you rent a car check out Sintra (can do by train from Lisbon if you prefer), Lagos (do a kayak tour), check out the SW coast of Portugal which is gorgeous and sparsely populated, Duoro valley (did an Airbnb Wine tour that was perfect (Manuel and Family wine tour), Porto (stayed at Kihara's Ribeira Apartment- perfect location and accommodations)... so much to see in Portugal. I'd focus on that.

Castelo de S. Jorge is a worth a trip in Lisbon. Also the wife and I took the 1 hour ferry cruise around the harbor this past summer, it went by a few landmarks (Belem Tower)

Got a few UK work acquaintances that maintain residence in Porto. They say the golf there is fantastic and the wine is top notch.

If you are into sports, they have a really cool soccer stadium to watch a game. I’m not a soccer person, but it was great for about $15 a ticket. Really electric crowd that gives you the feel of what a Euro soccer match is like.
Note: they don’t sell beer in the stadium, which I thought was weird.

The Portuguese league will be over in July unfortunately. The continental Euro 2024 tournament will be going on during that time period. (Being held in Germany, so you may want to be careful to avoid certain cities if you are looking at visiting Germany.)

If you fly into Lisbon, the high speed train to Porto is great provided the locals aren't on strike. It's a tilting train so they rocket right through the curves and the train banks like a plane so you barely feel it.
Porto itself is a terrific town. I'm a big fan of Habitat restaurant for a good dinner. Sagardi is also good but it's a basque joint in Porto, not portuguese. Have a sandwich at Sol y Sambra (its cash only, get two, theyre small). Drink a lot of port-tonics. Theyre great in hot weather.
Spending a few days in the Douro is also great. I prefer to ride the older train with the open windows and read a book and chill out. It's a heck of a view after teh first hour going through the burbs.
Madrid and Barcelona are a quick cheap flight away for a a night or two. Very easy. Have dinner at Barra Alta in either spot.

Porto is great. We spent a few nights there in July. There’s a fun part of town right next to a park with a great place to watch the sunset and drink. The name of the park is Miradoiro do Passeio das Virtudes. You can grab some food at one of the places on the street and people watch all evening.
I would also recommend a tour at Taylor’s Port across the river. You can also do a boat tour of all the bridges or if you’re feeling adventurous, you can just walk the whole thing.
Great town.
