Phoenix, Sedona, Flagstaff, Grand Canyon

Planning a trip in spring of next year. Late March. Trying to decide on our trip to Grand Canyon and back to Phoenix. Thoughts so far: Drive to Sedona spend 2 days, drive to Grand Canyon spend 2 days, drive to east gate of GC and drive south on 89 to Wupatki National Monument. I've been reading many opinions about Sedona area and we're excited about that part of the trip. Would like ideas about making the loop on the east side coming back to flagstaff. We have about a week and want to stay on the south side of GC. North side another trip. Thanks

Ive done this trip twice. Once with my dad in 2011; he passed away in 2017. So I brought my wife back in August of last year and we did the exact same things we did in 2011. Very emotional for me.
I am bias in my opionion here but it is truly one of the most beautiful and interesting areas of the country to me. Sedona is just incredible, make sure you take 89A from Sedona to Flagstaff and not I-17.
Take the Grand Canyon Railway ride to the south rim from Williams. That was an awesome experience. Tip: they have package deals for their hotel and train tickets. We did the package that allowed us a ticket on the nicest train car they have and it was just amazing.
Page, AZ is a neat little town. Not really much to do in the town itself but its a good homebase point for upper Colorado River activities and to see Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon, Lake Powell, etc.

I did this exact trip in Jan 2011 for the NCG.
We flew into Phoenix and drove to Flagstaff for 3 nights. Stayed at the Little America Inn...funky/retro hotel with HUGE rooms. Drove up to the Canyon and stayed on the South Rim at the Bright Angel Lodge for a night. Day trip to Sedona (it's like PCB with turquoise and silver everywhere), back to Phoenix for the game and fly out the next day. Take time to drive the road that runs parallel to the interstate between Sedona and Flagstaff, it's a beautiful run.
Was wild how different the weather was as you moved north/south (sub zero on the rim of the canyon and mid 70s in the stadium parking lot).

Just did this last year, skip Sedona and spend more time at the Grand Canyon

Seconded.
Unless you're hitting up a fancy spa/resort, there's nothing to recommend in Sedona.

Yeah, nothing there except the aforementioned resorts, excellent restaurants (Elote', Dahl & DeLuca, Mariposa), beer gardens, golf, tons of great hikes and world-class mountain biking in addition to some gorgeous scenery and the most scenic drive in Arizona going north out of Sedona driving thru Oak Creek Canyon up 89A. And if shopping is your thing (it's not mine) there's plenty of that. Don't get me wrong, Sedona is a tourist trap but to say there's nothing to recommend is laughable.

Shitty is debatable, but it's not uninformed. I've been there.

Unless you are planning on hiking the canyon or rafting through it, more than a day trip to the Grand Canyon is pretty pointless. But whatever floats your boat I guess.
And I say that as someone who lives out here and also doesn't care for Sedona (outside of the hikes and trails nearby).
That being said, hiking the West fork of oak Creek canyon just north of Sedona is great, and visiting Jerome, Cottonwood, and Clarksdale right nearby Sedona is great, particularly if you enjoy wine tasting. And I'd just make an Antelope canyon reservation and spend a day in Page rather than another day at the GC.

Sedona is real nice. I enjoy northern New Mexico (Taos, Santa Fe) more than Sedona, but it's still a nice town. If you like hiking and bike riding, Sedona is great. Yes, it's got the whole turquoise, tarot card/palm reading/vortex, Kokopelli vibe, but it's still a nice and fun town to visit.
Parts of it can feel pretty touristy and gimmicky - especially the part near the pink jeep tour/Saltrock Kitchen area (tons of turquoise shops, fudge, and "outlaw" type shops) - but it sure is beautiful everywhere you look.
We stayed opposite that end at The Wilde Resort and enjoyed it. Plenty comfortable with a nice restaurant/diner and bar in it. The Coffee Pot is good, greasy spoon breakfast and the Sedona Basecamp Beer Co. nearby is great to relax and take in the sights post hiking.
Mariposa is more for the views than the food, but the food is serviceable.
Pump House Station was a good restaurant and I liked the Art and Shopping Village across the street.
The ChocolaTree restaurant was nice to kick back and relax in.
Chapel of the Holy Cross Catholic Church is an absolute must.
Head to nearby Jerome, AZ for a fun side trip. It's this eclectic, somewhat ghost town. Grab a burger at the Haunted Hamburger.

I’ve done that same trip. The topography changes so much from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon. It’s just beautiful…if you like the Southwest. We enjoyed Sedona, but weird vibes with the vortex and crystal crowd. I know it’s touristy, but loved the Pink Jeep tour, along with a hot air balloon ride. One of my favorite vacations.

In Sedona, ATV rentals are a blast. I much prefer those over the Pink Jeep tours. There is a rainbow trout fishing farm in the canyon as well that is fun if you have little ones.
Everyone wants to hike the red rocks in Sedona but the Canyon offers some spectacular hikes.

It’s hard to go wrong in that part of the country. We went out there last October for the first time and it’s just a completely different world than Louisiana, especially for people that had never been that far out West.

We did this for a family trip and it was one of our favorite trips.
DAY 1
Flew to Phoenix. Rented car. Stopped for lunch at InNOut. Stopped at Cave Creek Park to see the cactus. Drove through Flagstaff and stopped in the South Rim of Grand Canyon. You go from desert and cactus to mountains. Crazy drive.
DAY 2
Sightseeing and hiking in the morning. Then we drove to Williams and went to Bearizonia (great place). Then dinner at a diner on Route 66. Kids did the zip line.
DAY 3
Sightseeing and hiking.
DAY 4
Drove to Sedona. Stopped at Sunset Crater Volcano Park. Rented an Airbnb and relaxed for the rest of the day.
DAYS 5-7
Horseback riding. Jeep rental. Hiking. A trip to Jerome. A trip to Montezuma Castle Park. Shopping and dinners.
DAY 8
Drove to Phoenix and flew home.

A few spots I like to avoid crowds:
Bootlegger Picnic Site
Take the trail from the south side of the parking area down to the creek, then walk upstream a few yards to a quiet spot on the creek. This is upstream from Slide Rock state park (avoid) and most other human contamination like noise and E. coli
Shoshone Point
Unmarked parking area on the south rim. Walk along a flat old two track for 1.0 mi where you'll reach a picnic area. Continue NW to the namesake point for a quiet spot and great view.
Desert View
Definitely visit the tower and primary viewpoint. Excellent viewpoint of the river and canyon. I like to walk behind the Deli to another spot that's usually quiet. There are social trails leading to 36°02'37.5"N 111°49'17.8"W
Although the east loop from Cameron to Flagstaff is pretty lame I still encourage it so that you don't skip Desert View. Cameron Trading Post has a large gift shop and decent restaurant. Other than that don't stop until you hit Flag again.
