New Orleans Tips Requested

Hey, fellas. My very small family will be headed to New Orleans for a weekend mini-vacation. It’ll be myself, my wife (no pics) and my toddler. We’ll be staying in the kind of general area of Touro. I’ve been to NOLA quite a few times when I was a kid, but this’ll be my first go where I’m “in charge”.
I was hoping to get some insight into the safety of this area. I’m not looking to drive everywhere (although we probably will drive to the zoo and children’s museum). Do y’all think we’d be safe to walk to a restaurant or two? Maybe Uber (with a car seat) to the Riverwalk and back? We’re probably going to avoid to FQ entirely on this visit, and don’t plan on being out much at night. Any thoughts or tips from people more familiar? I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t pretty anxious about keeping us safe.

That area is very safe by New Orleans standards and fairly affluent in places.
Tons of restaurants very near by on Magazine and Prytania.
The Zoo is close and easy to get to from there.
It would be safe to walk in that area but I'd probably take Uber's anyway as the restaurants you probably would want to eat at are several blocks at least.
You will get better answers on either the Travel or Food boards than on the OT, all you'll get on here is people from Bunkie claiming they know that area intimately and its a shite hole

I live in the Touro area. You shouldnt have a problem walking in the day/afternoon to a restaurant on saint charles or magazine. Going to the zoo is away from the kill zone and the riverwalk is fine too other than all the construction going on. As anywhere dont go down a street with no people, dont engage with the homeless, and stay off my lawn!

How would you best suggest getting to the Riverwalk? Like I mentioned, I’m tempted to try other methods than driving, but I think our only real option would be to get a Lyft or Uber with a car seat.

The Riverwalk has a massive gated pay parking lot. You could just drive. (Not sure why you really want to go to the Riverwalk?)
Other options are Uber, or taking the Streetcar at St Charles Ave, and getting off downtown in the Warehouse District and walking a couple of blocks

Well we were going to go to the aquarium and discovered yesterday that it won’t be open till summer. We’re trying to do the kid friendly stuff, and I thought that might be a good way to kill time. Do you have any other suggestions?

Advice for the pre-murdered part of the trip:
Urban South nearby is kid friendly.
The weed store is near Urban South. If you get your rec now you will be enrolled by the weekend.
The riverwalk is a shithole, avoid.
Zoo is good.
City park is great for kids. Kids Museum and playground by cafe du Monde.
Also sculpture garden can push kid in stroller through there.

Children's Museum in City Park, and then go to the Cafe Du Monde in City Park nearby. There is a lot of stuff to do and a toddler will enjoy both.

Thank you so much for your help. We’ll definitely be hitting the park now, and that’s where we’ll get the CDM fix. Question for you, though. I enjoyed the Riverwalk a decade or so ago. Has it changed? What’s makes it a crappy place to go? We probably won’t go by there now that we have other plans but I’m just curious.

Been awhile since I have been, last time I was there it wasn't that bad.
Once thing you could do if you want to go to the FQ, walk down Royal Street and just look in the windows of the antique and art galleries.

Nothing has changed. They are doing a bunch of work near the Aquarium but you can still go down below Jax. Grab a muffuletta and eat it at the Riverwalk. Walk around Jackson Square and down Decatur.
Take the streetcar uptown and to the Quarter/Riverwalk. Put the Le Pass app on your phone now.
New Orleans is still a great city.

This. Go early to Cafe Du Monde. It's never very crowded. Bring some bread to feed the ducks.
Have fun on the playground then go play mini golf, do the little amusement park, rent paddle boats, etc.

I remember going to NO just to go to the Riverwalk area 20-25 years ago. I take it's not the same anymore?
