Wife and I love to travel domestically. We love nature, fascinating scenery, short hikes (we are in our early 60’s), river rafting, and exploring new destinations.

We love visiting the northeastern states, and have travelled there during fall foliage. We loved Maine, Cape Cod, and Newport. We loved Alaska. We have done Monterrey, saucilito, San Fran, and Big Sur, and Carmel. Have traveled all over North Carolina and Tennessee. We loved Glacier national park, and recently did the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. Of course, we have been to Washington DC, and New York. We are not looking to return to a city.

Ideas we are thinking:
Sedona and Grand Canyon. And Antelope Canyon
Yosemite and Lake Tahoe
Utah National Parks
Exploring Virginia
Other destinations around Colorado (we loved Aspen). Thinking Telluride?

Any recommendations or suggestions appreciated. After losing a son years ago, we realized that the memories you make with loved ones are truly what remain. We are making our memories, and enjoying every one of them.

Couple of thoughts:

We loved the Sun River Resort near Bend OR. Stayed there last fall. It has it all. And you can do daytrips to Bend or Crater Lake, which is singularly the most spectacular place I've ever seen.

Visit Vancouver Island. Victoria is a neat city. We also stayed outside of Victoria at Sooke Harbor House. Really nice hotel on the straight.

Tour the Olympic Peninsula in Washington. Stay at Lake Crescent Lodge.

Here's to making more good memories while you can!

I did this trip in November a few years ago. The cooler weather made it a fantastic trip. Saguaro is a couple hours away and I really enjoyed that. Same for Monument Valley.

Did this trip at the end of this March. Cooler weather also made it fantastic.

I realize you mentioned domestic, but Canada is basically US lite. Y’all have traveled to some epic destinations and Banff would be a nice addition…but it’s not Domestic.

Same here. I still want to see it covered in snow, which someone would in Sept/Oct...if the roads are open.

If interested, would highly recommend coming up to WA outside of Seattle. September and October are good months (potential for rain in October) but there's plenty to do in regards to outdoors. My dad and stepmom came up last August and we went to Crystal Mountain near My Rainier and had a late lunch at the top. Plenty of small hiking, wineries in Woodinville, and outdoor activities like hot air balloon rides to do. There's also the Olympic Peninsula which has Olympic National Park, Lake Crescent, some great beach views near Rialto, and hot springs. Also the San Juan islands may be perfect for what you're looking for. Whale watching, small island feel, free ferries, etc.

Reason I quoted you is my grandpa just passed this week and I've realized exactly what you posted above about making memories and enjoying them. That's exactly what my grandpa would want and what I will try to do going forward to enjoy life. You never know what tomorrow will bring so may as well make the most of tomorrow while it's still here

All of these ideas are really beautiful. I love all of the suggestions. I am going to do more research into these ideas. Thank you all. Any more suggestions, please feel free to run them by me.

I'd echo the Canada thing. Few hour drive from Calgary, but you'd love Emerald Lake Lodge!

I recommend that you get the National Park Service app if you don't have it. It is the one that looks like this:

In addition to the Nat. Parks it has monuments, battlefields, seashores, trails, memorials, etc. You can create a personal list of each place you visit. As you travel you can read about a site nearby and decide about stopping. We have found all the sites we visited to be very well done.

You have been to a lot of places in the states I suggest, as others have, British Columbia. You can go to Victoria on Vancouver Island, drive up to Whistler and take a train to Banff Nat Park.

Last year we flew into LV then did a two week road trip to Denver with another couple. We did the Utah 5 NP and Meas Verde and Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP in southern CO among other places. That was a great trip and we did some hiking but not too much as we're older than you. One thing I would change though would be to rent an off road vehicle, probably in Moab or St. George, and getting off the paved roads.

Exploring Virginia
We take short trips into VA frequently as I like to go to historical sites. There are a string of towns up the Shenandoah Valley from Bristol TN/VA to Harpers Ferry, WV that we like to check out. And the eastern shores of VA and Maryland and New Jersey are fun places to go. Cape May NJ is very cool.

We did two road trips last year into PA and NY, one in the spring and one in the fall and you should put that on your list for the future. We were not in any of the big cities.

When we road trip we get off the interstates as much as we can. We just finished a 14 day, 5,000 mile road trip to Colorado and New Mexico and I est about 1/2 was not interstate. Oh, add Santa Fe to you list.

If you come to Colorado I’d definitely go in the last two weeks of September. Aspen trees are changing colors, and it’s one of the most beautiful times of the year. Wouldn’t come out in October as weather is iffy. I just spent Memorial Day weekend in Telluride. It’s the most beautiful town in America imo with a lot to do. Can’t go wrong there in September.

I second the Pacific Northwest. Everything CuseTiger said and also look into the north cascades national park and white water rafting on Sauk River. One of the best trips I’ve taken.
