My wife and I are looking at booking a kid free long weekend in the Northern Georgia/Eastern TN area for early November. We were looking at NW Arkansas, but honestly it doesn't look too impressive in the pictures. Still not ruling it out though (Eureka Springs). Now we are looking around in the aforementioned area. Interests are hiking/running, scenery, breweries, good food... I started looking around on Air Bnb but it's pretty overwhelming when I don't know a specific area to look. Suggestions? I'd like to keep it under 8-9 hrs from BR.

Edit: Based on some great info in this thread, we have booked a cabin near Blue Ridge (Aska Trailhead area) for November 6-11. Now looking for restaurant/hiking. etc recs. We already have a train ride booked for the Sunday after we arrive on Friday.

Edit2: Updated with itinerary for review/recs.

we spent time in dahlonega last december and had a blast. it's a very quaint town a little over an hour north of atlanta on the 400

found a small house on a horse farm about 5 miles out of town.

lots of wineries in the areas. as far as breweries tantrum is about 20 minutes or so away and had decent beer.

better breweries in and around blue ridge I'm told but never made it over there.

there's an irish pub called shenanigan's in dahlonega that has a good beer list and really good food.

do the consolidated gold mine tour

helen, ga was fairly trashy/touristy. i'd probably make a trip over to blue ridge instead of helen if we went back

Here’s the place where we stayed. It’s pretty much a tiny house

Highlands/Cashiers area of NC if you are looking to get out and about, otherwise if you are just staying in the cabin and doing some outdoor activities Id stay anywhere in the region.

Dahlonega is alright, not sure I spend a vacation there(Although I do live 30 minutes away )

The helen comment is on point. Dont go unless you like rude foreigners everwhere

Definitely. Will check this out. We aren't really romantic sit by the fireplace types. We like to get out and about during the day, up early doing physical stuff, happy hour, grab an early dinner and pass out and do it over again. It's on the upper end of our preferrable drive time, but could definitely work.

Yep, it hits all the marks except breweries. There is a brewery in Highlands, just kinda small with just okay beer. There's a brewpub in Cashiers as well, but their beer is very forgettable. It has a tourist trap feel to it. Only brewery I've ever been to that charges for their stickers.

But both have plenty of good dining options, good shopping, and plenty of hiking in the area.

So exactly how trashy is this place?
I'm considering a three night trip this fall and was hoping for the closest town from here with a Marriott property that would make it an easy place to call home base to explore the smokeys.

It's probably not too bad as a home base. The two times I've been(both in the fall) it's been filled with bikers and drunk college students. It's kind of cheesy as well with its architecture depicting a German village.

I live in southeast TN and agree with the Blue Ridge recommendation. Great home base with several awesome nearby attractions. Raft the Ocoee, visit Gibbs Gardens, race high speed karts at the Atlanta Motorsports Park. All within 1 hour drive. That doesn’t even include the lake in Blue Ridge, great nearby hiking and mountain biking, and a great downtown. Enjoy!

Blue Ridge is a great town. Many restaurants, breweries, etc. There's a train ride (Blue Ridge Scenic Railway) that leaves from there too. The Gf loved it. I did too. Something about trains.

You can base yourself there and have easy access to a bunch of trails. Including the start of the Appalachian Trail.

There's a few wineries around, but most are near Dahlonegha (1hr away)

Nice Apple Orchard nearby

Ocoee river just across into Tennessee is beautiful and has some great rapids if you like that. (you can go to where they staged the 1996 Olympics for whitewater rafting)

Cohutta Wilderness Trailheads nearby with some great scenery.

Toccoa River Swinging Bridge is less than an hour away.

McCaysville is nearby and has a couple breweries and a nice ice cream shop right on the river.

Tank Town USA was fun. You get to drive tanks and crush cars.

Gibbs Gardens was enjoyable

Thanks for the details. Blue Ridge was on my short list. Will look into it further.

I might need you to go to the olive oil store and make an order for me. Lol I know I can order it online and ship it, but I'll let a local taste it to make sure it's up to par.

I have stayed in the blood mountains several times and love it. As someone mentioned, the town of Dahlonega has stuff to do. However, I would hit up the water falls in the area and go hiking in the mountains. I've never been in November, but I bet it will be beautiful.

I live in NW GA. Helen is small and trashy but a new Fairfield Inn there should be nice. Check out Anna Ruby Falls. Dahlonega and Blue Ridge are awesome.

The Springhill Suites in Chattanooga on the TN River is nice as well and the area is worthy of exploration.

Good recommendations in here but will say N Ga doesn’t have great breweries but the wineries near Dahlonega are surprisingly good. I will add that Lake Rabun is beautiful and has excellent hiking nearby (Tallulah Gorge, Rabun Bald, and several waterfalls) to provide another option.

Dahlonega is great. Lots of cool shops, restaurants and bars.

You could stay at the Amicalola Falls Lodge! Maybe 20 minutes to Dahlonega.

We stay several times a year in Blue Ridge GA, which is maybe 45 minutes to Dahlonega. Tons of shops, restaurants. Toccoa Riverside Restaurant is a favorite. Many cabin choices to look into. We recently stayed here for example!

Compared to Tennessee, Georgia’s breweries are the 5-star. But then again, there’s few breweries in eastern TN

Something like this would be really cool with no kids.

Once again, appreciate all of the info, fellas. We've booked a cabin Southeast of the town of Blue Ridge. The address is Bell Camp Rd. It looks to be off of Aska Rd.near Flat Creek? Any details on this area, hikes, etc?

I see after a quick glance it looks like the Aska trailhead is right outside our door pretty much. Of course we'll hop on the AT one day. Already have the train ride booked for the Sunday after we arrive on Friday.

When are you going to be there?

Can give you some good spots, if you are looking for something. Ive done the GA section several times. Might be a drive to get to some spots, because of time on forest service roads.
