Montana - Glacier National Park & Whitefish trip review

WOW. Our trio to Montana was better than expected and here is my review:
Day 1) We took a 5-hour flight, with 1 hour layover in Dallas, into Kalispell, rented a car and spent the first two nights at the park motel in Apgar Village on Lake McDonald in GNP. We then went to a resort condo on Big Mountain at the Whitefish Mountain Resort for the rest of the week.
Day 2) Going to the Sun Road. While the park motel itself was as plain as you can get (no TV, AC, Wi-Fi or cell signal) it has the most important feature you could want. Location, Location and Location. To be able to walk out your door to watch sunset or sunrise or dip your toe into the cool clear lake water on Lake McDonald was worth the high cost of the room alone.
The location also meant you could jump in the car and go exploring the park anytime you felt up to it. The short morning rides at sunrise were amazing and the ability to get on the Going to the Sun Road (most of Day 2) before the traffic built up was great as well.
Day 3) Hike to Avalanche Lake in the morning. We had plans to hike Hidden Lake from Logan’s Pass but the trail was closed due to bear activity. Explored Lake McDonald area in the afternoon and evening.
Day 4) Went back to the park from the mountain for a trail ride on horseback in the morning and spent the rest of the day going to Polebridge and Bowman Lake. For those that have been to Polebridge, MT…then you know what I mean when I say you have to really want to go there to get there! Had a great meal at Jalisco Cantina in Whitefish. The food, service and atmosphere was great after being on “park food” for a few days.
Day 5) Rested up, and then went back to West Glacier and ate a fantastic quick lunch at the Wandering Gringo food truck before spending the afternoon white water rafting on the Flathead River. The rafting experience was much better than we expected. It is a beautiful river with a great guide from Great Northern Rafting Co. We then did a little shopping and had dinner at Abruzzo in downtown Whitefish that night (I say night… but it doesn’t get dark till 10PM!). Abruzzo was pretty good Italian fare, but not great.
Day 6) We were really tired by now but we took the chair lift to the summit of Big Mountain in the morning (cloudy and cold for the first and only time of the trip) and hiked the easy East Rim trail and then had a lunch picnic at the Les Mason State Park on Whitefish Lake. That afternoon we went to the Huckleberry Festival downtown and then had the best meal of the trip at Latitude 48 in Whitefish. It was really good by any standard.
Day 7) Flew out and was back home in less than 6 hours.
What a great trip and we plan to go back to Montana next summer to see the rest of the park.
Speaking of Glacier National Park, while I thought no NP would ever challenge Yosemite as my favorite park, I am now in the process of reconsidering that. GNP is simply outstanding, and we were not even able to explore the east side of the park due to CV-19. I can only imagine it would be # 1 on my list if we could have seen the whole park. It is simply that beautiful. Here are just a few pics we took.

Great review! Makes me want to go back tomorrow.
Hard to compare it to Yosemite. Yosemite valley just has sooo much in one spot. On the other hand, you feel like you are all alone in Gods masterpiece in GNP because of its massive size.
Then there is Yellowstone/grant Tetons......
So thankful we have all of these great parks in the states to debate which is best.

awesome stuff
I need to go back so bad. It's been over 10 years now.
We had a nice Grizzly scare hiking Avalanche Lake on my last trip. Always fun.

Booked a trip for September to GNP last night, so perfect timing for this review. Very excited to do it, it's my first national park.

quote:Lucky you. Bring a windbreaker, light jacket and/or coat!! The weather can change very quickly and if the sun isn't out it can be pretty chilly. On the other hand a t-shirt and shorts were best most of the time the sun was out during the middle of the day.

Let me know if you need any suggestions.

Couple of quick questions:
If you rented a car, did you go for an SUV or simply a sedan?
I know you stayed really close to the park entrance, but did it have a lot of vehicle traffic? We are staying in Creston the first half of the trip then in Whitefish the second half, and I was curious if the traffic is bad in the early mornings getting in.

quote:Renting a vehicle was the worst part of the trip as there is a severe shortage of vehicles up there when I went. We booked a mid-sized car for $715 and then I upgrades to a Subaru Forester AWD that cost $853 for the week. I drove 700 miles so that $853 seemed steep to me based on past rentals. I just checked,,, car rental at FCA in in Sept is about 1/3 of when we went so get the biggest vehicle you can afford. The AWD was helpful on the gravel road to Bowman Lake.

quote:Based on the cost of car rental I think we went at summer peak so it should not be too bad in Sept. Due to CV-19 there is almost no foreign visitors and therefore we saw no tour buses at all. Foreign visitors/tour buses can create a big crowd problem during normal year but we saw none on our trip. I think crowds will not be an issue once school starts.

quote:True but having that AWD Subaru was nice just in case. It sleeted at Logan Pass one evening, but not when we were there.
You don’t need a 4x4.

Details on costs, itinerary, etc, etc?

That seems steep, I was glancing around and looks like can rent a SUV for around $70/day . I think I prefer to get something like the Forester to be safe.

That's what I was hoping to hear!

We are flying out the Saturday of Labor Day weekend and coming home the Friday. Spending the first half in an Airbnb with a nice patio with a very scenic view, and the second half at the Firebrand Hotel in whitefish. Flights were about $280 from MSY per person, and lodging was about $1500 so far, but there were for sure cheaper options when I was looking for both. Haven't planned much more as far as detailed itinerary yet.

Bowman Lake
It's likely not even in the top 10 "spectacular" sights in just that park, but there's something about standing right about where you took that picture that makes right there seem like one of the most serenely wonderful spots on the planet.
Should have eaten at Northern Lights Saloon in Polebridge, though.

Glacier NP - My favorite place in the world.
This is the best picture that I have ever taken and it is my favorite. No touch ups. This was the view just outside my window at Many Glacier Lodge about 15 years ago. I have it as my screen saver now. I woke up one morning, waiting for the winds to die down, and took over 300 pictures from 4 a.m. to 7 a.m. The sun rises early and sets late in Glacier in the summer.
