Glad you enjoyed your trip. Looks like you did the typical touristy stuff but if you come back you will be blown away in the backcountry. 99% of tourists do what you did, but to really experience the area you need to get away from the crowds.

I got a much better feel for the area after this visit but to be honest we are little too mature (old) to go back country without a guide.

I can do a long day hike but my wife isn't really able to do more than an short easy to moderate trail. I had to did Avalanche Lake on my own as they did just the ez loop

Compared to every other NP in the summer I really didn't find the crowds bad at all. No tour buses made a big difference if you know what I mean. It was a lot of families and avid hikers that drove in from surrounding states for the most part.

I suppose you’re right about the crowds being lesser than most years but we still feel the pressure especially with the east side of the park being closed this year. Our roads are still crowded and whitefish is a zoo, but I guess it could be worse.

You have been in the canyon a long time!! For us "city folk" it was virtually deserted. I had no trouble with parking* or waiting for anything almost the entire time there. Whitefish Mountain Resort was very calm and peaceful.

*except Logan Pass on the way east but a short wait opened up a spot on the way back out

Thanks for the review, Crow. Me and the gf are staying in for 3 nights in Hungry Horse before heading down towards Yellowstone/Tetons the last week of September. I can hardly wait.

I lived in Whitefish for a couple years renting, and decided to buy in Columbia Falls and that’s where I am now. I love it here.

I’m glad you were able to experience the mountain as well! Lots of good folks here.

The most breathtaking part of the park. By far and away the most beautiful national park I’ve ever been to.

They had a lot of nice local arts and crafts and some street food like kettle corn and shaved ice (aka snoballs) etc... Not similar to a Louisiana festival with the loud bands and booze but we had a good time and bought some of our better souvenirs before going to dinner down the street at Lat 48.

The Bad News - We had a room in St Mary Village reserved before they decided, after the 4th of July, to close that side of the park.

The Good News - We want to spend a week on the east side next year!!

Tried booking at Apgar and Many Glaciers lodges yesterday for 8/2021 and they are already all sold out. Picked up a spot at Swift Current Motor Inn and plan to stay a couple of days in Whitefish and Waterton.

Speaking of which has anyone stayed on the Canadian side? Is it worth it?

Many Glaciers lodges
Closed for the year. In fact, all lodging and road access on the east side is closed for the year. The Sun Road is closed at Rising Sun which s 5-6 miles from the east edge of the park.

Apgar
Call them as they had daily rooms open up due to late cancellations when I was there last week. Also, there are two separate motels their. One is the Apgar Village Lodge and the other is the Village Inn @ Apgar. They are not affiliated with each other so you make have to make two calls to be sure. Both on Lake McDonald with a nice "park village" there with a store, restaurant, rentals etc..

ok..Yeah I think the only reason we got the rooms so late in the year (in July for August) was because of Covid and the uncertain nature of travel this summer. That being said the Whitefish Mountain Resort, really a ski resort, is a great a place to base out of and they have nice condos for a reasonable price in great location. 15 minutes to Whitefish and 30 minutes to the park.

Here is the sunrise from my condo on Big Mountain

Just scored a cabin at Apgar Village Lodge. Thank you.

I guess this isn't affiliated with the park vendor?

I took almost that exact same pic of avalanche lake. Mine was taken a little earlier in the year.

We are going in a few weeks and still need to book our accommodation. How was it not having AC? I am used to cranking down the air to sleep at night so it makes me a little worried. Looks like most places with AC are in “town” but we were hoping to stay somewhere a little more remote.

A fan is all that needed at night..and you may in fact turn on the heat as it went down to 47 while I was there.

Speaking of Glacier National Park, while I thought no NP would ever challenge Yosemite as my favorite park, I am now in the process of reconsidering that.

Nice to hear. We're going to Glacier for the first time next June, and Yosemite's always been my personal favorite also.

Heading to Missoula first for the marathon weekend (Beer run Friday/5K Saturday/Marathon and Half Sunday). Then we're driving up and staying at the Glacier Park Lodge for five days at the eastern gate to the park.

We had a nice Grizzly scare hiking Avalanche Lake on my last trip. Always fun.

Last night I saw a piece on 60 minutes about grizzly populations growing near humans, particularly near Montana and Glacier. How common is it to see a bear on or near the trails?
