After listening carefully to Customers and conducting extensive research, Southwest decided it will assign seats and offer premium seating options on all flights. The airline has been known for its unique open seating model for more than 50 years, but preferences have evolved with more Customers taking longer flights where a seat assignment is preferred. Additionally, Southwest conducted robust operational testing that included live and over 8 million simulation-based boarding trials. The airline is confident that these Customer enhancements will meet expectations and not compromise the airline's operational efficiency.

Southwest also announced it is adding 24-hour operation capabilities with the introduction of overnight, redeye flights. Booking on initial routes is available today through Southwest.com, with the first overnight flights landing on Valentine's Day 2025 in five initial nonstop markets: Las Vegas to Baltimore and Orlando; Los Angeles to Baltimore and Nashville; and Phoenix to Baltimore. Southwest plans to phase in additional redeye flying in the carrier's coming schedules as part of its multi-year transformation to a 24-hour operation. Redeye flying, coupled with continued reductions in turn-time through new technologies and procedures, is expected to provide incremental revenue and cost savings, enabling Southwest to fund nearly all new capacity over the next three years without incremental aircraft capital deployment.

About fricking time. If they keep the same RR program they offer currently, they will be one of the the best airline to fly on in the US.

Reductions in turn time is code for, “with assigned seating wheelchair usage will be reduced 90%”

100%... The liars and fatties will have no excuse to pre-board at that point.

It is amazing splitting flying between SW and United out of Houston. When on United, I would guess 1 pre-board due to disabilities on average, when on United, its probably 5 on average.

Love the downvotes on my above post about them being one of the best airlines in the US if they go the route they are claiming.

Would love to hear thoughts on why they wouldn't be?

Best rewards programs (Can get a free one way every 2-3 rountdtrips)
Companion Pass
Newer and complete fleet of big body planes 737s
Bags fly free
Free same day changes with confirmed boarding
Customer service has slipped post-covid, but still better than other airlines

Their only negative over other airlines is the boarding/seating process.

we can't end this, though. I have seen so many people healed in flight! 6 wheel chairs get on, only need 2 wheel chairs to get off. I guess the plane is closer to Jesus (being in the sky) or something.

They better keep my 4 free seating upgrades through my credit card.

I didn't downvote (yet). I love SW and fly them whenever I can. I agree with most everything you said except the talking point of the day. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I think the open seating policy is what makes them better than other airlines. Paying extra to select a certain seat or boarding group seems pointless to me.

It is not a hassle to log on 24 hrs before the flight to try to get in A or B group. And I don't see how standing in line by number is much different than standing in line by the 9 groups every other airline has now.

Agree, I don't see the issue with the current seating process. I do agree the pre-boarding has gotten ridiculous but it seems there would be a way to address this without going to assigned seats, sounds like a money grab, guess they need to make up somewhere given the free bag policy.

The whole reason is to get rid of the pre-board issues and actually reward frequent flyers.

Agree, back in 2018/19 I had zero issues with SW. Pre boarders were 1, maybe 2 on average a flight.

Post covid, it is out of fricking control. I still have status and when someone who spends 10s of thousands a year flying on your airline ends up being the 30th and further back person on a flight due to biz select taking 1-15 and then 10 pre-boarders... and the first aisle seat being row 9 is fricking ridiculous.

Im one of the people they call out in their analysis... Had highest status with SW 2015-2020 and then the clusterfrick started.

In 2022 I siphoned trips over to United and have had Premier 1k on them 23 and 24 and kept minimum alist on SW during that.

If they dont want to go this far you either require pre-boards to present a doctors note and hold pre to only themselves.

Or you could hybrid and allot first 5 rows to first come, first serve status and booked seats. They board first and then its wide open for everyone else.

I used to only fly SW, but their pricing has gotten out of control, and they don't seem to fly non-stop to anywhere I want to go.

Sitting here at BDL and checked Southwest flights to Dallas since Love Field is close to my house. No direct flights and about a 5-6 hour trip. Screw that.

Even trying to fly from BDL or PVD to anywhere on the East coast (other than Baltimore) is like that now. I have credits and miles that would cover a flight but the thought of taking 6 hours to fly somewhere that "close" seems dumb.

The Boarding process for SW is/was far smoother than other airlines with dozens of people lining up into the walkways without any clue where to stand blocking the walkway for everyone else.

By and large, the people who dislike it the most seem to be people who get upset that a few pre-boarders board the plane before them. For most people though, it’s incredibly more efficient.

You mean their most valuable customers? The ones that spend all the money

1-15 who pay extra $$$ for business select to get on first and then 16-30 something who are a-list preferred and a-list who spend thousands a year on status.

And are all not impacted whatsoever by those pre-boarding but for some reason, can’t unwind their panties to get over it.

I can give an example from a week ago. PHX to HOU

Boarded A-25, A list... There were 18 pre boarders when you account for actual and then their partners.

That put me boarding 43rd and there not being an aisle seat available until Row 10.

SW is the absolute worst when it comes to treatment of their best flyers. Every other airline allows free seat upgrades or 1st class upgrades and has them in the front of the aircraft if they so choose, away from the engines and added noise.

So yes, when you spend 10/20/30k a year on flights, you have the right to get your panties in a bunch.

I 100% guarantee the feedback that drove this decision was from their a-list clients and the fairness/treatment of those individuals.

I'm one who took my money elsewhere. Went to United in 2022 and got Premier 1k for 2023 and 2024. That was after years upon years of a-list preferred with SW.
