Going on a cruise this summer and was hoping to find some fishing to do but was going to try to do it separate from the cruise as all the excursions are basically tourist traps. ride you around for awhile and might catch some small fish off of a reef or something.

i'm looking more for bone or permit fishing. tarpon. light tackle. may be more appropriate for outdoor board but was seeing if i could get any bites here first.

other suggestions besides fishing are welcome as well.

I didn't do any fishing but went for a week long dive trip. If you decide to dive, get a small Hawaiian spear and shoot as many lion fish as you can. It's a blast.

We didn't fish in Roatan. We rented a taxi all day and him take us around the Island. We went to an iguana farm which was cool, ate at a local rest that was excellent that I cant recall the name of, went zip lining on the best zip line I've been on right across the street from the dock for $40.

Little French Key. Look it up. Do not do the excursion, walk out past the gates of the port and take the cars to LFK.

It was the best time I have ever had on any cruise excursion. Just a wonderful Island paradise that only allows so many a day, and has excellent spots to relax, but then also an animal conservatory on the island and quite a few bars.

My grandma used to own a house there so I'm fairly familiar, although it's been about 10 years. What I can tell you is the fishing and scuba diving are top notch. She owned a house on the private part of the beach, with a lagoon coming in. I was able to walk out and swim in the lagoon on any given day and go catch lobster with just some gloves on, not to mention the fish as well that would make their way in from the sea.

I don't know if you'll have time to scuba dive, but if you do, take advantage. It's probably a top 5 spot IN THE WORLD.

If you need any numbers of places, PM me and I can get them for you.

If anyone is lucky enough to have the opportunity to go to Roatan, take it. It's one of the most beautiful places I've ever been.

Just got back, 3/26-4/2. Diving is unreal. I didn't hear anything that positive about the fishing.

Went last summer on a cruise and Roatan is my favorite port of all I have been to. Go to the West Bay beach area. Gorgeous. I haven't been but have heard good things about Little French Key. We did a tour with Victor Bodden Tours and it was not bad at all. A driver picked us up not far from the pier and drove us around the island and took us to the Bodden house where they have an amazing collection of exotic birds and monkeys. Then he took us to the beach for a few hours before driving us back. Worth every penny which wasn't much, about $35 per person.

I rented a house on West Bay last year right next to Las Rocas and the beach and reef there is amazing. They had plenty of guys with boats wanting to take tourists fishing, but I didn't really see any fish coming in.

IMO cruises are an easy way to take all the worry and planning out of a vacation, but to really enjoy the beauty a place like Roatan has to offer, you need to just travel to that 1 place and spend a week or so.

If you have time, or ever visit again, check this restaurant out. It was a unique dining experience to say the least. La Sirena Restaurant

Take a taxi out to Cal's Temporary Cantina for lunch. Cash only but the best food on the island with a stunning view.

West Bay Beach is a nice spot but they raise the prices on cruise ship days. Iron Shore Grill at Grand Roatan Resort at the end of the beach is a very good restaurant.
