I've been researching this place because of this board. I get that it's not going to be huge 5-star resorts but where is everyone recommended to stay? I see a few smaller places and then a lot of small houses. Some of these hotels look like 1985 panama city in the photos so I was just curious what the board's favorite spots are.

Most likely just me and wife.
Slight chance + 11 year old kid.

Hotel secreto. Any of the ocean view rooms. Boutique hotel close to the action but tucked away overlooking the Caribbean.

Personally I always stay in little airbnbs. But I don't need to be fancy.
If you like hotels I would likely Stay at Mia Reef or privileges.
I figure I'm going to have a cart anyway, so location doesn't mean as much to me.

What do you prefer? Isla offers everything from shanty apartments to 5* luxury homes...variety of hotels in between.

At airport leaving today. Stayed at beloved, it was amazing. Couples only resort. Took a catamaran to isla Mujeres one day and went snorkling. Pretty cool place.

I'm all about the cheap shanty apartments. Nothing like a $45 full apartment. More money for other stuff.
Most I've spent was $100 a night getting a Penthouse in the south of the island.
Sometimes I stay on north beach.
Last month I stayed near Mangos, on Jesus Ross near Chedraui.

We stayed at Privileges 2 years ago, and not that its a bad place, but I would probably rather rent an airbnb or something more private. Beautiful area, but too many people around. Norte beach is always packed from the people from the ferry. We had more fun riding around on the golf carts finding hidden bars than anything else. Hell we found ourself part of a locals birthday party at a place similar to Piccadilly in the middle of no where. Highly recommend getting the shrimp ceviche at soggy peso and stopping for drinks at the drunken donkey.

Ya, we don't typically splurge on super nice accommodations because we are only in our rooms to sleep.

Exactly. Though on the last trip I found out there is a service like an Uber Eats that will bring you food from any restaurant on the island. It was pretty cool. It was 9:30 and I didn't feel like going back out and was hungry. Ordered food on the app. Put in my address, like 45 minutes later I was getting a notification that the guy was there.
They do groceries as well. I always hit up Chedraui and get a ton of their bread and some tortillas and make lunches with my left overs and have breakfast on the days I don't go to Mango or Lola Valentina for breakfast.

Anyone have any specific airbnb/vrbo recommendations on the island?

I just use the app. Put in entire units and aC. Then look for ones in my price range.
I don't get the cheapest but I get on the cheaper side.
I usually stay away from the tourists areas.
Though the Malecon apartments were nice they were loud. I like staying away from the beach so I get quiet nights. Though the streets are always a little noisy.

I recommend getting the "mapchicks" app for isla mujeres. It list every restaurant and bar and gives info on each. Plus has info on activities and things.
I would also join an isla Facebook group. You can find plenty of rentals and good deals in the groups if you Facebook.
The map chick's app is a one time payment but I use it extensively every trip there.

Eat at Bastos! (closed on Thursday) Get the arrechera steak.
Get the whole fish cooked with achiote somewhere. It's delicious.
I stay in Playa Norte because that is where most of the action is on the island. Rent a golf cart for a day or two to tool arond but DO NOT drink and drive.

can you drink and then drive the cart?

In the past a lot of people that go to destinations like Isla seem to think that the laws they have to obey at home don’t apply there. They do things like renting a cart then packing a cooler and driving around while drinking. The cops on Isla do not turn a blind eye to that type of behavior.
