There is a passenger ferry that leaves from Cancun several times a day if you intend on having your entire vacation on Isla. Sit on the top and listen to an old guy play his guitar and sing American rock.
There are day trips you can take from Cancun on private boats but those get pricey.
Once you’ve discovered Isla, it’s hard not to visit every year.

Just got back. First time on Isla and it was amazing. Really nothing negative at all to say about the experience although I do worry it will get run over by tourists in the next few years.
We stayed with Scott at Hotel Secreto and my lord is that place awesome. Unfortunately, it will not be like many of you remember. Scott (owner) had to lay off all 20 employees during covid. He now only has employed an accountant, a maid, a bartender, and a pool guy but literally could not ask for a better experience. Everything is taking care of for you if you ask. Everything is within walking distance and we did not have one bad meal. Went sailfishin, took the golf cart around, went to all the beaches, etc.
As for covid, everything is pretty much open and going. Masks are still required most places for the most part but not a huge deal. Only place I got word of that covid shutdown was ballyhoo (moved across the street and is apparently terrible now without the old chef).

Sad to see William and Rodrigo go if they did. Amazing guys who always made sure we always had what we needed. I hope the pool guy is Jose who also doubled as a server. I love that little hotel.

Nope. I asked and he said he had to let Victor go. The current bartender is not even employed by him actually. He is on loan from his wife through las hamacas. His name is Angel and is is a super nice guy and makes great drinks. Pool guy I believe his name was Cesar but I did not really interact with him. Scott is there basically all hours of the day doing the jobs of many of his former employees doing his best to keep it running. Im not sure what it was like before covid but I was far from disappointed with my stay and service so don't let me convince you it has gone down the shitter.
Basically, told me from March to July he did not have a guest and then from July to October he would have a room or couple a week and it has slowly gotten better from there.

I don't doubt you. It's always been well run. I'm just saddened to see people that were so dedicated to that place gone. No blame to Scott. I'm a business owner and I am sure that he agonized over letting people go and is doing everything he can to keep the place going.
I also heard that Dopi's on Hidalgo closed. So sad.

Glad you got to experience it now. I also fear it will become like Ambergris Caye in that big hotels and tourism will decimate the island’s charm.

What are the differences between Holbox and Mujeres? Recommended place to stay there?

I'm told that Holbox is like Isla was 30 years ago. We went January of 2020 and I loved it. HGG has a hotel for you for sure.

Holbox is definitely a few decades behind Isla if you can imagine that. It is very chill and not a lot goes on there, which is perfect for me. We stayed at Hotel Para Ti. But our next visit we will stay at Casa Tortugas. You will be next-door to one of the best restaurants on the island called Luuma.

It's hard to go wrong with Isla or Holbox. They're both fantastic islands. Just remember that cash is king down there (particularly on Holbox) and using pesos always save you money over dollars.

Yeah. I learned a lot of things for next time I go particularly they f'n hate if you use a card and they also much prefer pesos over USD. Best bet is to pay in pesos for everything except hotel and large establishments.

What are the food/drink prices like in Holbox? Can you still eat and drink like Kings like in isla and not break the bank?

Similar to Isla and I'd expect them to be very affordable compared to the states.

The big drawback with Holbox years ago was the insects(mosquitos). Has that been addressed?
