HGG Photo Journal | Isla Holbox, Mexico (PIC HEAVY)

To get here, we flew into the Cancun airport and had a private car (van) drive us to the town of Chiquila, where the ferry took us over to Isla Holbox. The total cost was $250 USD round-trip and worth every cent.
CASH IS KING ...and I mean it. This place is a time warp back to a small fishing town with no paved roads, no cars, and cell/wifi service that will remind you of AOL's dial-up days. All of these things were the perfect recipe for us to get away. Most places only take cash. The USD-to-Pesos exchange rate (market) is 19-to-1, but on the island you should expect a 17:1 in restaurants and 15:1 at some of the smaller beach bars.
The island has bikes and golf carts aplenty. Nearly everything is negotiable, but the prices were so cheap it wasn't worth my time to save $3 a day on a bike. Just like anywhere else we've been in Mexico (island wise), time is of little importance. Although signs may say "open from 9-6", that is simply a guideline. There are dogs ALL OVER the island. They are protected in the same manner as the flamingos and dolphins. The folks that live there are very much into their Mayan heritage and you'll see it (and taste) everywhere you go. No restaurants were haggling people to come eat, no beach vendors walking around trying to sell you hats and party favors. Just a quiet town with super nice people, zero crime, and handfuls of European backpackers just passing through.
Kite Surfing was crazy popular here, as there were well over 20 of them in the water every day (on the northern point). Artwork covered the town...airbrush, paintings, murals, mosaics, it was all beautiful. Not an ounce of graffiti.
This beautiful little gem of an island was an amazing getaway for a week. Could have stayed another week if I had the time....and more perfect weather. We had a nasty storm blow in our last night....you'll see in some pics below. We learned on the second day that the island is pronounced "hole bosh" ...not Holbox as it appears phonetically. Any questions about the pics or the trip, fire away.
@VABuckeye - lots of high rez pics so scroll at your own risk. Didn't feel like writing too much because they island isn't much, but in the same breath, is SO MUCH.
::::: THE HOTEL :::::
Our Hotel was Para Ti, super affordable and a 2 minute walk to the beach and also into town. Quiet enough to be away from the live music at nights (which lasted until midnight or so). It's owned by a nice Cuban lady in her 50's, sorry no pics.

This place was creative with their bathroom doors....

I would destroy this dish.
Thanks for the pics. My wife and daughter are heading to Holbox after Isla at the end of June. I haven't decided if I can stay away for that many days but if I do Holbox looks amazing.
See you in Isla at the end of June!

That is garlic fish. They use garlic oil extract along with sautéed garlic. I could smell the deliciousness before the plate even hit the table.
Have fun!
There’s a whole bunch more I could’ve posted about the island itself, let me know if you need any recommendations. There are a bunch of new boutique hotels that are super nice and private houses to rent which are affordable
....and yes, see you on the “original” Isla in June!

Wow beautiful pictures. It looks like the place is overwhelmed with white people unfortunately. That was my favorite part about San Jose is I could legit go into the city and see very few Americans/Europeans.

This time of year it is popular with scandanavian tourists escaping their cold and hot Argentina ladies working there as waitresses

Hotel Para Ti
Casa Tortugas is a more upscale version that’s on the north side of town.

Nice write up. Do you have a van/car service to recommend?

We used Holboxeno for our transportation/transfers

OK. Just booked my flight to Cancun June 27th. 30k miles for business class non-stop from IAD. Couldn't pass on that. So a get together is on. I know you don't drink but I'll imbide while we shoot the shite for a while.

All good! There’s a killer bar on Hidalgo that has a true mixologist who would rival ones in big US cities. He doesn’t do all the showmanship but that SOB can create a modern art masterpiece.
He makes mine non-alcoholic and they to die for. Can’t think of the name, but it’s on the west side of Hidalgo and the bar is along the street with swings, the back part is a fairly big restaurant.
Here are pics of this place. I see the Valentina sign in the background. The mixologist has the red bar apron on with all of his “tools” in it. Just watching his attention to detail when mixing and making cocktails is highly entertaining.

Did you eat at the place that basically had taco trucks inside. Can’t remember the name now.

Yes, I think so. It was also a karaoke bar ya? Here is a pic I took:

So when is the TB going to Isla this year?
We were going to go early June, but not it looks like late June. June 20th at the earliest.
