Another recommendation for google maps, it will walk you to the exact station and tell you what train to take, and when to exit. Look into the 7 day unlimited metro card, and watch a YouTube or two to get the general layout.
And, who visits NYC and avoids the subway, what’s the point.

Wanted to come back and thank y’all for the help. Subway was very easy with google maps, we still went the wrong way twice but it was our fault and the pressure of the door closing and not knowing if it’s your train or not.
Just using your CC to swipe was really easy as well. We never felt in danger or anything, it does get crowded during peak times which is expected but it’s nice to not have to uber everywhere.

Subway is great. Like others said, walk up, use tap to pay, easy. One way ride (incl transfers) is $2.9, maxes out at $32 on a card so after that it is free (still have to tap, just don’t get charged).
I use Google maps now, but the first couple of times I used a designated subway app. Just know where you have to get off because signal is hit or miss on the train itself.

The easiest way to get started with the subway is probably to grab a MetroCard. You can buy them at vending machines in the stations. Since you're a group, you could get one card and reload it as needed, or each get your own. As for understanding the system, Google Maps is your friend

Giggle maps.
Also look at the subway maps. Many stations have tunnels that connect two underground stations these tunnels are black lines in map. This helps in times square for sure.
I always start in heels kitchen and walk to the subway from there
You can get anywhere on the trains and Google maps will tell you which trains to take and what time to leave.
And everyone already has that ap

We were there thanksgiving week and walked almost everywhere. We used uber from Times Square to 9/11 museum then to Central Park which wasn’t bad. But also tried to Uber around midtown and was dumb. Should’ve walked or used tried to use the subway.

Just take the A train north and south during daylight hours and you may not die.

City mapper app worked fantastic for me last week. You just swipe or tap a card on your way into the turnstiles and hop on and off where it tells you to. I actually have tap pay on my garmin watch so I just breezed right through. The city mapper app even suggest which part of the subway to try and sit based on how crowded it is. Highly recommend downloading the app. It was a first time trip for me and I had zero issues getting where I needed to go.
